Many people are confused by the last page of Chapter 601, in which
an old Madara is seen with his sharingan after rescuing obito
The confusion that arises from this is that Obito has stated that he gave Nagato his eyes, and the general consensus is that he was speaking in place of Madara. So, the big question is: if, at this point in time, Nagato had already awakened the rinnegan, how is it possible that Madara still has eyes? Many people are saying that Madara took eyes from his laboratory, but they forget that the uchiha massacre had yet to happen so this point is highly unlikely. Now, to my theory (finally), which is about the nature of Nagato's rinnegan and how he came to obtain its powers: My theory is that:

1)The rinnegan's power can be transfered from one person to another, and, in conjunction with this point,
2)The rinnegan (the actual/physical eyeball) does not need to be transferred for this process to happen.
3)As such, Madara did not give Nagato his eyes, but rather his rinnegan powers, most likely in a dormant state. This is why he was seen with only his sharingan at the end of the chapter.

Although I don't have much to base this information on, I will use what I have gathered to support my point
1) Nagato's Six Paths of Pain: As we all know (or should by now xd), all of Nagato's paths had rinnegan eyes. How? It would be impossible for Nagato to transplant his eyes twelve times for his paths to each have the rinnegan. If my theories are correct, Nagato used a secret technique to transfer his abilities between the paths, which proves that the rinnegan's powers can be transferred without an eye transplant.
2)After unlocking his eyes, Nagato was never seen without his rinnegan active: Why is this important? It is important because this is a common trait among transplanted eyes, but it could also be a trait of transplanted powers/abilities. As I said, I don't believe that Madara gave up his eyes, just his powers, so when Nagato unlocked his powers, he was unable to deactivate them, much like Kakashi's sharingan or Ao's(?) byakugan.
3)Obito stealing Nagato's eye: Again, this might seem like a weird point, but hear me out. Obito said that he gave Nagato the rinnegan, which is obviously a lie. My thoughts on this are that because the rinnegan was never Obito's, he had to steal the actual eye in order to obtain its power. However, if Madara, the person from which nagato's powers had originated from, had gone to Nagato's body, he would have been able to take his powers back without taking the eye. Obito had to steal the eye only because the rinnegan's powers were never his.

An obvious hole in my theory is that Nagato still had his own rinnegan active along with the other paths. My only explanation as to why this wasn't the case with Madara is that Madara gave Nagato ALL of his powers and as such was left with nothing himself. Also, Madara was revived with the rinnegan, which has led some to believe that Madara did not give Nagato anything, and that Nagato's rinnegan was his own from the start. I'm pretty sure that it was stated (correct me if I'm wrong) that when a person is revived via Edo Tensei, that they have all of the abilities that they had when they were living. I support this with the fact that Itachi was revived with eyes and his sharingan/ms even thought Sasuke was in possession of them. If there are any other holes that you see in my theory, feel free to point them out and I will do my best to "cover" them.
Lastly, thanks for reading my theory xd

but then how would you explain each path body only having one rinne ability and not all of them?

I believe Nagato did this intentionally. I believe Konan stated that he had to concentrate the rinnegan's abilities into each body, so perhaps it would have been to difficult for him to give each path every ability. Also the strength of each path and it's ability was directly proportional to the amount of chakra Nagato concentrated into each one, so another explanation is that he didn't have enough chakra for all paths to use every rinnegan ability

it was stated by madara that he died shortly after he activated his rinegan.it means that he didnt transplant his eyes nor his rinegan powers to nagato.because last chapter showed that he was still alive.as stated by tobi who acted as madara.he gave the rinegan to nagato.ive read someone posted that its somebodys(elder son/sage of 6 path) eyes.and this makes much more sense to what is happening right now in naruto.if it is indeeds madara's eyes or rinegan powers.obito used his kamui to time travel back in time and really gave nagato his rinegan.this would explain apart from zetzu cell why he was as tall as minato when he fought him.and makes obito right now much older than kakashi.its dragonball z all over again,i really doubt this from happening.as to why madara takes notice to such a random uchiha and uzumaki?obito and nagato might be his sons
