(For Anime fans) Able to understand a language, but unable to speak it ...

...Well, I had wondered: would one be able too manage too understand the spoken/wright'n language, but be unable too speak it/wright it...?

I've picked up a few words/phrases along the way. couldn't spell them by any means xd

Are you just talking about languages in general?

Speaking, listening, writing, and reading are very different skills, especially when you're dealing with your non native language. For example, I can read and write Spanish fairly well, and I can speak semi-conversationally, but when I try and listen to a native speaker I have difficulties.

Well if someone hasn't formally learned the language then naturally they wouldn't be able to read or write. Mainly because of the fact that if they only hear it they with be unclear on how to spell it when they haven't been exposed to the written form.

After you have been around a language so long then you begin to pick up things. Like some people can speak certain languages but can not write them and vice-versa

Haha, sorry. I had meant more clearly:

If one were too understand (read) (for reading subs on anime) but unable to speak/communicate...

And yes, I do know one can pick up a few choice words by being exposed to them after a period of time...

For me that'd be Spanish!
I understand a lot of everyday speech, but the grammar wasn't really anything I set myself to learn, so forming sentences both in writing and speech is hard(though I'm guessing the speech part is partly due to my shyness).
So yes, if being unable to speak and write it would be dependent on things such as unwillingness, then I bet there are more than me in that situaton.
It's a bit of the same deal with Japanese as well, since I can understand a bit as I've studied it in school for a bit(and watched a whole lot of anime and other things where you'll stumble upon the language). I mean, I know basic grammar, but writing is supposed to include Kanji(the Chinese symbols) in order to be at least beyond elementary school level. Speaking is also hard, well maybe not, but I'm not really fluent in it.xd

I've got Spanish in my blood, but was never taken to being learned anything about the heritage... (I feel like a lone Uzimaki about it .-.)
