Kakuzu didn't kill Hashirama. He was hired to assassinate him (before he was a human ragdoll with 5 lives), and obviously failed. His village shunned him for his failure, and he took it personally, stole the secret technique that made him waht he is, and left town.

I never thought of this until now. Kakazu killed the 1st Hokage. Madara lost to the 1st Hokage. Does this mean Kakazu is stronger than Madara? It doesn't seem like it at all. In my opinion, Madara is wayyyyyyyy stronger than Kakazu, but why couldn't Madara beat the 1st Hokage when Kakazu could? Hmmmm... Kakuzu lost to the 1st Hokage. Because he failed to kill him, Taki (his village) shunned him, and he stole the Kinjutsu, killed the elders, took their hearts, and became the Akatsuki member you see. He pretty much has the story of Zabuza and Sakumo Hatake put together.
