cause itachi goal was to let sauske take vengeance on him and kill thus reedem the uchiha clan and make sauske a hero in the process so he can build the clan on a new foundation not on lies etc.

by him killing madara he will be a hero along with itachi, itachi stop the edo tensei, and sauske killing madara will save the shinobi world and the 5 kages who can take away his status as a criminal
