Did you use Brightness and Contrast?

I tried that before and it kind of looks like he has Five O'Clock shadow around his mouth area. Even on yours a bit.

No problem. Its just that it is harder than it looks because if you just do brightness and contrast it will mess with the color levels on the hair, face, and background for some reason.

on the layer all i did was add linear burn and it darkened it up right away at the same time clearing the pic up a bit
