Here's the VIZ scan of
Tobi said this in front of the only two people (at the time) that knew that he isn't really Madara. So he'd have no reason to lie and still pretend to be Madara. And note how he says that he stole cells from Hashirama during "that infamous battle." It almost seems like he was a bystander or something. But if Tobi really was at VOTE, as he has no reason to lie to Kabuto and Zetsu, then he can't be Obito. This can also explain how Hashirama didn't notice that Madara was still alive. Maybe Tobi did something similar to Madara like what Haku did to Zabuza, secretly snagged some of Hashirama's DNA, and then left to retrieve the seemingly dead Madara later.
What do you guys think? Is this just something that Kishi didn't completely plan out, or is there a hidden meaning to this statement that we weren't supposed to figure out until Tobi was revealed to really not be Madara?
