Chapter 62: New Missions

The village of Suna, enjoys a serene day in it's desert terrain. The day seems fine as Koichi and Ryoko walk through the main streets, heading towards the Kazekage residence.

“How's the secret training been going Ryoko, ready for that test?” Koichi smiles smirks.

“It's been going well actually, though I'm glad to get some more mission time after all these months. I take it you've enjoyed being on your own for all this time.”

“It's alright, I kinda miss the old team though,” Koichi begins, he gets a huge grin on his face, “I'm pretty excited for this mission, even if Kankuro-sensei and Koji aren't around.”

“Speaking of, what has Koji been up to? I haven't seen him much since we returned.”

“He's joined up with the medical corp. He's the student of one of the jounin medics in Suna. He's been pretty locked away in the hospital though.”

The two shinobi make their way into Gaara's office and they see Koji standing before Gaara beside three other shinobi. As the two chuunin enter, Koji smiles softly, pleasantly surprised to see his brother and Ryoko. “Little brother! Finally getting out of that stuffy old hospital I see.” Koichi comes up and pats his brother on the shoulder. “This your new team?” Koichi looks at the three shinobi dressed like him wearing cream colored jackets, and the head female stands with a white cap on her head. Suddenly Koichi's yanked by his collar down to the ground by Ryoko and she stomps on his chest.

“Forgive our rude intrusion Gaara-sama.” Ryoko says on Koichi's behalf.

“It's quite alright, I'll be with you two in just a moment.” Gaara turns his attention back to the four other shinobi. “As I was saying, the Tracking Unit which was dispatched by Konoha fell into a trap after following the trail of the shinobi who took one of their villagers.” Ryoko and Koichi begin to pay closer attention as they hear of the news, remembering of Koga's involvement with the mission. “With the alliance we've solidified with Konoha dedicated to seeking out Kabuto, another team was dispatched to aid the entrapped team, however they faced an ambush by soldiers baring the Otogakure uniforms. Though they managed to successfully fend off their adversaries, their squad faces some significant injuries. Your mission is to meet up with the squad and assist their wounded and also to assist in the rescue of the Konoha unit that was deployed.”

“Gaara-kun, three of the four are medical practitioners, wouldn't it be more suited to send a team of more advanced and experienced shinobi?” Matsuri says out of concern.

“With all due respect Matsuri-sama, these three are the finest young medics in all of Suna. Mako and Sora have been studying under me personally for 3 years now and more than ready to participate in the Medical entrance exams. And Koji, though he's only been with me for the past four months, his abilities are on par with these two in his short time. It's actually quite amazing.” The female medic says.

“Yes, precisely why I chose you and your team.” Gaara says, Matsuri bows her head in acceptance, “We only managed to receive a distress signal, though the coordinates of the unit's location is no longer the same due to our scouts confirmation that the area has been occupied. They've covered their tracks for their own safety, so finding them will be a challenge, as well as getting into the enemy's territory safely.”

“Gaara-sama, forgive me but wouldn't it be safer to send another squad of shinobi to locate and also protect the medics?” Ryoko says in concern, “Sending a medical squad and expecting them to do this task is a little risky don't you think?”

“Yeah, let Ryoko and me help, besides if our men are out there all alone I want to be able to help.” Koichi says.

“That's what Koji's for,” Gaara says. Koichi and Ryoko look at their former teammate with his usual unexpressed face, “Koji, you'll be leading the mission in finding our Suna unit and escorting the rest of your team through safe passage.”

“Yes, Gaara-sama.” Koji bows his head.

“Wait, why Koji?”

“Guess you forgot I've always been able to keep up with you in combat brother, you suggested yourself, which is almost as good me going myself.” Koji's tone holds some level of playful arrogance.

Koichi smiles at his brother, “Yeah I guess you're right, it's just I've gotten so much better I wasn't sure you could handle much is all, but I guess you should be able to handle a team.”

“After you reach the unit, the rest of you will be taking orders from the unit's respective captain, now head out.” The medical team nods and they exit the room leaving Ryoko and Koichi before Gaara.

“A genin leading a jounin, now I've officially seen everything.” Kankuro stands against the wall outside his younger brother's office looking at Koji, and then at the female medic. “How do you feel about this Rin.” Kankuro jokes.

“Be quiet Kankuro, you should be proud of your student instead of making comments like that.” Rin says.

“Yeah I know, that one was for you.” Kankuro walks past the medic smirking and he enters Gaara's office. “Sorry I'm late.”

“Kankuro-sensei!” Koichi shouts in excitement, “Long time no see.”

“I'm not your sensei anymore remember. Though it has been a while. This will be like old times, minus Koji though.” Kankuro says.

“Wait, you're coming with us?” Koichi asks.

“Yes, Kankuro will be leading you guys on this mission. This mission requires a close nit three man cell that is familiar with each other.” Gaara says, his voice holds a sense of urgency with it as he speaks.

“What is the mission?” Ryoko asks.

“You are to capture the leader of the Jomae village and bring him back here for questioning.” Gaara says. Koichi and Ryoko's eyes widen at the mention of the Jomae village. Koichi clinches is fist and looks down, changing his expression into anxious anger, remembering his last encounter with the Jomae shinobi.

“I chose this team because of the personal connection you have with this matter. I hope you've matured enough though, to turn that passion into constructive energy.” Gaara says, “I'll need you to be focused. The success of this mission can help us figure out how they infiltrated our village last time.”

“Yes, Gaara-sama...” Koichi says, “I can do this.”

“Scouts from Konoha's Anbu have discovered a trail that could lead to a potential location of the Jomae village. They haven't found any concrete location but if they continue on the trail they should be able to and assist you on your way. Avoid blowing your cover, though this is a small village you'll face a significant disadvantage if you pull too much attention to yourselves.” Gaara instructs.

“Don't worry Gaara, we'll get the job done. Let's go you two.” Kankuro leads the team out of the room and Ryoko and Koichi follow.

As the last team of shinobi leaves the room, Gaara stands up and goes into his window. “Gaara-kun, I know you were hoping that Koichi would be able to handle the stress of this mission, but are you absolutely sure about sending him?” Matsuri says with concern.

“I trust Koichi, you should trust me Matsuri.” Gaara says.

“I do trust you Gaara, believe me I do, but there's something else...You're uneasy I can tell, but I don't know what it is.” Matsuri walks closer to Gaara out of concern, “Please tell me what's bothering you.”

“The reason Jomae village was able to attack us last time was because of a spy they had lurking inside Suna. Their insider is within the village's Anbu, but I haven't been able to figure out who it is yet.” Matsuri's eyes widen upon hearing Gaara's shocking testimony, “I'm sorry I've kept you in the dark, I've only told Kankuro.”

“But, why? Don't you trust me?”

“It's not a matter of trust that prevented me from telling you sooner, but a matter of my own confusion on the situation. We couldn't maintain the stability we had during the last Great War. Our victory against the Akatsuki was thanks to Naruto's strength. Naruto was the one who stabilized all of the nations after the war ended and prevented chaos.”

“You sell yourself short Gaara-kun, you were left to take the leadership role over the entire Allied Forces after the other four Kage were killed and you led us all to victory as well.”

“Even so, what became of the Five Nations, and many of the other lesser nations at that, after the war was far from the unity that the Allied Forces was meant to establish. The ninja world was so damaged and torn, we faced the possibility of another war simply out of fear. Naruto brought the villages back into a state of stability where each could prosper once again and successfully rebuild within safe perimeters, but as it turns out we're still very far from peace.”

“There is a lot of secrecy and distrust between the other villages I will admit, but we can pull through this. Suna and Konoha are strong as long as we're united, and Kumogakure's Raikage was Naruto's mentor during the war. As long as we act as the pillars we can—”

“But if there is instability within one or more of the pillars, how can we assure that we are going to stand strong. There's not just distrust amongst the villages, but among ourselves too, which is what worries me more than anything at the moment.”
~Several Hours Pass~

Kankuro, Koichi, and Ryoko make their way west bound from Sunagakure, exiting the the desert and entering a large forest terrain. Ryoko takes lead as sensor, picking up any trails left behind that can lead them to their destination. “Wait!” Ryoko stops and Koichi and Kankuro comply. Ryoko walks over to a tree and she discovers a small piece of cloth on a bush.

“What is that?” Koichi asks.

Ryoko closes her eyes sighs, “A clue hopefully.” She says. Koichi stands in slight confusion. “It's strong enough,” Ryoko mutters to herself, “I have a lead.”

“But how?” Koichi asks.

“My sensory abilities are more sensitive now thanks to my training. I can take objects that people have come in contact too and pick up their chakra signatures that way.” Ryoko explains, “It's faint but if I can hold onto it for long enough we can make it to the main source before I lose touch with it.”

“Then we should hurry, my assumption is that our allies from Konoha are the ones who left us that marker in order to get us where we need to be.” Kankuro says, “If that's so than this is only leading us in the direction were they last encountered the village. The Jomae or notorious for their status as nomads. Their village in terms of people is the size of a large clan. With their lack of numbers, the specialize in guerrilla warfare type tactics. Sneaking up on them is going to be difficult and tracking them is going to be difficult.”

“If that's the case, what are the chances that you think we're heading straight into a trap?” Koichi says. Ryoko and Kankuro turn their attention towards Koichi as he speaks.

“What are you talking about Koichi?” Ryoko asks, “How can this be a trap?”

“Think about it, these guys specialize in all things indirect. They lack the size, military power, and foundation to be like the rest of the shinobi villages. Kankuro even said it himself, they live based on guerrilla warfare. They managed to infiltrate Suna, they're village is famed for their abilities to capture information anywhere even from the Great Nations, however they always elude us and they never have lost any information they've gathered. Now, all of a sudden we have a lead to their location.” Koichi explains.

“The scouts didn't even find the exact location of the village, they located a general area of where they could potentially be. They've still been eluding us and besides they've been discovered beforehand so what brings up the theory that we're running into a trap?” Ryoko says

“Konoha has some of the best units of tracker shinobi, potentially second best to the Kirigakure's Hunter-nin. Finding targeted shinobi isn't something that should be extremely difficult for them.” Kankuro backs up Ryoko.

“Like I said, you're the one who suggested the idea sensei. Tracking them was going to be difficult for the simple fact that these guys have mastered these tactics beyond the scope of any other shinobi. They're sneaky, underhanded and stealthy. They know how to cover their tracks to the point where they should know if they're being followed. Let me ask you guys this then, if we're only being led into the general facility of where they're supposed to be and the second best trackers in the shinobi world couldn't find them, what happens if we find them?” Ryoko and Kankuro stop and Koichi lands in front of them.

“So if this is a trap, what are they after?” Ryoko asks.

“What they're always after, information. They're probably trying to ambush us and they'll try to steal any information about Suna that we have.” Koichi suggests.

“What concerns me more is, if they know we're coming from Suna...how did they?” Kankuro says. The three shinobi stand in deep inquiry over this unexpected road.
~Night Falls~

In a mountain range, several small tents and small huts are organized for a small distance. The moon and it's light are concealed by a thicket of clouds, however several persons can be seen throughout the village. Over two kilometers away Koichi, Kankuro, and Ryoko lay below in bushes. “I can sense several chakra signatures a few kilos ahead.” Ryoko says, “What now?”

“Now we go with the plan, I hope this works Koichi.” Kankuro says. Koichi nods his head and the three make their way towards Jomae hidden under the cover of night.
~Inside the Land of Rice~
Koji and the medical team continue through the Land of Rice, doing their best to track their injured comrades. The squad of medics head deep into the territory of their enemy, following a faint trail, Koji managed to pick up. The team passes through a large thicket of trees, heading northwest into the country side. As they pass through one of the sets of trees, a face is revealed hiding within the bushels of leaves within the trees. His entire body is concealed as the group passes them unknowingly. He disappears shortly after Koji and the team passes.

Moments later he appears kneeling before his superior, “Sir, they took the bait”

“Very good, how many were there?”

“Only four, it was a squad of all medical shinobi, should we act now?” The shinobi asks.

“No...they're following a trail that only they could pick up. Once they disclose the location of the rest of their unit, then we'll take them out.” The head shinobi stands in front of a small platoon of shinobi ranging of at least 25 soldiers in spotted gray camouflage armor, baring Otogakure headbands.

Both Suna teams face the risk of falling into traps as they continue to partake in their respective missions. The night shrouds deceit and hides the true intentions of all within night's embrace.

Their all grown-up. <LOL> Gaara is always looking out the window. You killed the 5 Kage? You could have at least left one alive? Mystery theme here: Just how much do they know? Is it within Suna or all the Great Five Villages? They are a big threat. I hope they survive. Awesome Chapter.

This is my favorite arc because it's a major turning point in the series.
