Hashirama Senju was the leader of the Senju clan of the Forest. He and Madara Uchiha co-founded Konohagakure and Hashirama became the the First Hokage (Shodaime) of Konoha. The First was revered for his ability to use wood-based jutsu, which is a bloodline limit ability that combines Earth and Water element chakra together. The other special talent the First possessed was the ability to control, to some extent, the powerful Tailed-Beasts.

The First is the older brother to the Second Hokage of Konoha and the grandfather of Tsunade. He, along with his brother, were the sensei for Sarutobi, Homura Mitokado, and Koharu Utatane. After he died, his DNA was stolen and used for human experimentation by Orochimaru. Of Orochimaru’s sixty test subjects, only one child survived - Yamato, who inherited both of the First’s special abilities. The First along with his brother, were resurrected by Orochimaru’s Impure World Resurrection Summoning during the attack on Konoha. To defeat him, the Third sealed his soul inside one of his shadow clones using the Dead Demon Consuming Seal.
