I'll make it known before I begin. I respect the beliefs of all religious and non-religious people, so long as they also respect the beliefs of others. With that said, I'll give my own opinions on this topic.
I am a Christian, I was raised that way, yet I'm also an admirer of science and its teachings. The most scientific reason I can give as to why I follow my God is that mankind has been able to split and regroup every atom known to exist, yet they have yet to find the "formula" to create life. The day that lab-created living cells are presented to the world, I will have my reasonable doubt to go against my beliefs. Even then, though, I will most likely still keep my faith for two simple and hopefully understandable reasons.
The first is that I simply cannot imagine myself believing in any other religion or not believing in one at all. I try to imagine myself as an atheist, but I think about God and his teachings far too much to think that one day, I could ever believe that he doesn't exist.
With THAT said, I have read much of the bible and find it difficult understanding or agreeing with some of its teachings, the most prominent being that "homosexuality is an abomination". I see no problem with homosexuality and find it hard to imagine why God would create so many homosexual people knowing that they would end up in Hell after their deaths (I say this because I am someone who believes that people are born gay rather than it being environmental). It also upsets and disheartens me that only approximately thirty percent of the world population shares my beliefs, the reason for which I feel should go without saying. As for other popular teachings that give people reason to not believe, I have been told before that a biblical day was much longer than a modern day. Therefore, just because it's said that God created the universe in seven days does not necessarily mean it took a actual week.
Having listed my personal conflicts with my own beliefs, the second reason why I have faith is that I fear my God and after studying other major religions, the Christian God is the only deity for which I can find reason to fear. That being said, Christianity is the only religion for which I have reason to fear the probability of me being wrong should I choose to believe something else.
These are my beliefs and my reasons for them. Please respect them.
