Wood Release Secret Technique: Nativity of a World of Trees
A technique developed by Hashirama Senju, founder of Konohagakure. The user forces trees to grow on any surface, easily creating a dense forest anywhere they choose. A small plant can grow into a forest in an instant.[2] By generating chakra, the user manoeuvres it as they see fit for attack and defence; and furthermore, this omnipotent technique even allows them to capture the enemy at the same time. With their tremendous life force, the trees can pierce through earthen walls, and extend their branches at their prey in an instant. Even stating that Konohagakure wouldn't have been established without this technique wouldn't be an exaggeration.

Dance of the Seedling Fern
The last of Kimimaro's five dances. Countless bones rise from underground, which can be as many as thousands, up to the tens of thousands. The blades of bone indiscriminately slaughter whoever stands on the ground's surface. Furthermore, if this fails to bring down his foe, Kimimaro can become one with the bones, which in turn can allow him to attack an enemy unnoticed.

Can you break through a tree trunk?

Hashi's wood release creates a forest in an instant. Kimi's jutsu is slower and limited to making bone spikes. Wood release>Bones KG

Not as hard as steel, stronger than tempered steel. So it's stronger than what you stated, but even still Hashirama can form the strongest tree and just keep rejuvenating it piece by piece, much like Gaara did with his sand.

not comparing hashi to kimimaro comparing the jutsu's in terms of effectiveness kimimaro can go inside of any of the bones an attack from there hashi is stuck where he used jutsu they have to be on equal levels
and for the record i can break cinderblocks bricks and 2by4 with punches or kicks my sensei can do bricks with his finger tips

any way kimimaro's bones become as hard as tempered steel sure they break through wood we do know steel cuts down trees so does rock for that matter

They do seem very similar. Maybe if Kimimaro hadn't been sick he would have improved it and made it almost as good if not better than Hashirama's tech.
