You might be right (but wrong), however, it could only be awaken when you feel the emotion of losing a friend or family. Theory: Kakashi emotions rose an alarm when he thought Naruto was going to die by Sasuke's hand at the "Valley of End." That is probably how he achieved MS.

Theory:Who killed Rin? and How her death is connected to Kakashi having MS..

I think Kakashi killed Rin after obito died, that's why he goes to that stone with dead ninja's names, because he feels guilty for killing her when Obito told him to take care of her, so he goes to lower his guilt, and that guilt and pain was also the cause for him awakening the Mangekyo sharigan, it took some time because he is not an Uchiha.

there may be 2 reasons for him killing Rin,

1- She held him responsible for Obito's death and they had a solid argument and Kakashi killed her in anger.

2-He red the uchiha stone teblet somehow and got to know about the method to awaken the MS (by killing your friend).
