- He wanted a portion of his power to get stronger. He probably admired Hashirama's power so much to become jealous and obsessed, so it's no surprise he tried to steal it. Hashirama could control 2 elements, Water and Earth, but also combine them to create Mokuton, an advanced chakra nature. With them, Hashirama could control the environment and change it to his advantage. He also had the ability to keep multiple bijuu under control and suppress them anytime he wanted (Yamato is an example of that). Thanks to his Senju lineage, he was gifted with the Sage's lifeforce and physical energy, which it can be translated in a longer lifespawn, great chakra reserve and stronger taijustu (Tsunade is an example of that). He was also an excellent medic, capable of healing injury's without forming hand signs. Do you think this was the only reason for Madara to fight Hashirama? Ofc not, because...
- HE WANTED A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE TO UNLOCK THE RINNEGAN. That was the ultimate secret to activate the Sage's dojutsu. He probably read that on the Uchiha tablet after he unlocked the EMS. Hashirama was the only man alive at that time to be on the same level of Madara Uchiha and capable of pushing him to the limit. Following this thread (thanks to TheEye for providing such info)
