If it isn't a scam then it is illegal. It is very easy to track who used the site and when they are caught you will either be in legal trouble or have to pay them back.

it was just the thought of free points but it's not worth it for that much trouble

It's definitely a scam. This have been very prevalent lately. You wont get any microsoft points, dont visit the site, and tell your friend that his account is sending these messages. I guarantee he didn't send it himself.
