Hey, umm, im just wondering if Is It possible to boot Windows 7 or XP off your SD card? I want to put the OS on their, so I can boot it up off my bro's old cpu. It got the blue screen, Unmountable boot volume, so i used Bios and deactivated the HD, which has the original OS. So is it possible to boot it off the SD card, if it has the OS on it? Thanks.

It is possible but you would need a large memory card with a lot of memory on it. Good luck with it though!

I wouldn't recommend trying to boot from an SD card. That much read/write wouldn't be good for the card. I would recommend going online and looking for cheap hard drives in the 20-40GB range (so long as they are not solid state) they should be easily affordable. Preferably check in overstock, or "this has been sitting on our shelves for like eight years" stock.

from what i've read when i used a thumbdrive to install windows 8 that some bios can handle booting from a thumbdrive/sd card and others can't. it could also do with the motherboard you are using.

The issue with installing from media other than disk (HDD, SSD, CD/DVD/BD) is that those formats generally are not designed to be booted from. Most motherboards, if not all, have options for alternative medias (such as USB drives) in their bootload order, one still has to configure the USB drive/SD card to be bootable. That requires configuring the partition table properly. Alternatively, you can use programs designed specifically for such instances. For example, if one were to do a Debian Live CD install from a USB drive, said individual could use unetbootin (apt-get install unetbootin).

As for an SD card, I would strongly recommend against using such media for said purposes. As I said before, if you want the SD card to live a long and happy life, such read/write accesses would be bad for it's longevity. Instead, I would recommend using a USB drive, which is designed to handle such loads, and tends to be cheaper than SD cards.

Of course, the final and ultimate solution is to use a DVDR. Or, if you have the means, do a netinstall.

I assure you that you didn't help him at all. Your article shows how to install the OS from a dvd or usb, but what he's asking for is to boot the OS from his flash drive, which aren't the same thing.
Let alone the fact that it's on the third page of your blog.

i was not spamming.....was i then|?
he was saying via memory card....it is equal to formatting via usb disk.....cause memory card goes to the usb port.....in the boot meny there will be usb disk option for pen drive, memory card and other secondary storage devices except DVD/CD.....
Don't start something that you can not finishU_U

I'll finish it then.

You're wrong, and Kurapika is correct.

In order to actually boot from an external device, such as a USB drive, or SD card, there are certain parameters that must be met, such as creating/editing a MBR. If you have to ask what a MBR is, then you shouldn't be running a tech blog.

what i am saying is that....in the boot menu there will be no any extra name for memory card....there will be just USB disk for secondary storage devices.....and the article describes about formatting via USB disk.....the whole point of this discussion is that i got an infraction saying i was spamming...which i was not....but it seems like the infraction can not be deleted now....

You don't KNOW me....so don't say what i can do and what i cannot....U_U
