Old lady said sasori and oro killed gaara's dad? that would mean they were partners then. Is this a plot hole or does it fit the time line?

No they were not.
After Getting his arms sealed, when oro is back at his hideout we can see a withered arm with an akatsuki ring on it and oro talks about why he left the organisation.
And we know that oro left akatsuki when itachi cut off his arm.
This implies that he left akatsuki some time before the chuunin exams
