Chapter 55: The Semi-Finalists
“Alright, we're ready to begin the next match, Koga vs. Senten Yamanaka, Begin!” Kiba announces.
“I'm not going to lose to you.” Senten says. He immediately whips out two scrolls and unravels them. The two scrolls shoot out several dozen projectiles from each of them towards Koga. Koga launches four shuriken and makes five seals.
“Shuriken Kage Bushin no Jutsu (Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique)” The four shuriken immediately multiply into several dozen shuriken and they counter Senten's projectiles easily.
“This kid, can do high level techniques like that?” One of the proctors says.
“Yeah, it's not so surprising though, he's the heir to the Koga clan.” Udon says coming from behind two of the proctors. The other proctors look with surprise on their face.
“Wasn't Shodaime Kazekage the leader of the clan as well during his time? That would mean...”
“That kid is the Great Great Grandson of the First Kazekage. The Koga and Iga clans were Sunagakure's equivalents to our Senju and Uchiha clans. Though the Koga clan didn't possess a kekkei genkai like the Iga, they were masters of several different skill sets.” Undo says.
They look down at the two shinobi fighting particularly at Koga. Jiraiya clinches his fist as he watches fight unfold.
Koga takes out another shuriken and he uses the transformation technique to turn the weapon into the windmill shuriken. Koga launches the large shuriken towards Senten as the projectiles collide with each other. The windmill shuriken makes it through the flurry of small projectiles towards Senten and he leaps to the left. As he leaps away from the weapon, the shuriken follows him in his direction. Senten looks at Koga and sees him controlling the shuriken, catching a glimpse of the wire Koga has attached to it. Senten stops and then heads in the opposite direction. The shuriken brazes his left shoulder just before he changes direction. Koga changes the direction of the shuriken, however there's a loss in momentum and the weapon is slowed. Senten takes out a kunai and launches it towards the wire and he disconnects the shuriken from Koga's control. The shuriken continues onwards and Senten leaps up into the air over the weapon. He takes his thumb and whips some of the blood on his shoulder onto it and makes a few quick seals.
“Kuchiyose no Jutsu (Summoning Technique)!” Senten places his hand down and a large cloud of smoke appears under him. Koga squints his eyes, glaring at Senten with intensity. Senten appears on a large hawk with four other smaller hawks surrounding him.
Koji, turns towards Kana as he notices the hawk as her summon as well. “Senten's my cousin...he's more like a brother to me actually.” Kana says.
“He's your cousin?”
“Yeah, his father is Shishou's older brother. He wasn't a shinobi, he died a few years ago, it's been rough for him and his mother. I've been taking care of him most of his life and I'm the one who taught him our clan's techniques. After I learned them from Shishou that is. I also taught him my summoning contract as well.”
“I see...”
*Senten...have you mastered that technique already?* Kana continues to look down at her cousin as he sits atop of the large hawk. Senten makes four hand seals ending with the ram seal.
“Transform!” The four smaller hawks let out a cry and they transform into large shuriken and the spin rapidly around Senten. *Protect my body* Senten communicates telepathically with the large hawk and it bobs its head. Just then the four large shuriken begin to descend down towards Koga. Koga takes out two smaller shuriken and transforms them into windmill shuriken and he begins running to the right. As he runs he notices the shuriken following him.
*Damn it, just what I thought.* Koga thinks to himself. He looks up at the large hawk and sees Senten with his eyes closed holding his place with the tiger seal. After a brief moment Senten holds his hands out in a triangular like fashion out into the open and he suddenly falls unconscious. Just then one of the transformed birds appears, approaching Koga's left. Koga brings his left arm in to increase the potential energy and power as he swings his windmill shuriken. Two more shuriken begin to descend one after the other in front of him as he does this. Koga stops and swings his left arm, smacking away the one on his left sending it back into the air some ways. Koga then jumps up in the air over the first shuriken as it comes body level to him and he throws the shuriken in his right hand which connects to the second kunai heading for him. The fourth shuriken comes from his right and Koga takes the shuriken in his left hand and puts it in his right and blocks the shuriken. He then forces it off sending it back.
Koga notices the shuriken stop in place after it goes back and begin propelling towards him again. Koga looks back up at the large hawk and he launches his last shuriken towards the hawk and the unconscious Senten. Koga then holds down both his arms and releases four strands of wire from his sleeves. As all four of the shuriken come towards him again, Koga acts. He launches his arms out to the side of him, releasing the wires to his side. He captures both of the shuriken coming towards him from the sides. He then spins around counterclockwise, turning the shuriken and changing their direction towards the other to kunai.
The large hawk flaps both his wings releasing a gust of wind which sends Koga's shuriken heading back towards him and also steering up a large amount of dust. Koga sees the dust and he whips his arms out. The four wires now connected to all four of the controlled bird, he whips them all out in front of him as his shuriken returns followed by a large dust storm. The dust reaches Koga just after he releases the birds and his shuriken clashes with one of them. Koga emerges from the dust, leaping high into the air with chakra in his feet and he launches a kunai towards the hawk's wing. The Hawk swerves out of the way and Koga notices the three of the four transformed shuriken emerge from the dust as well and they catch him in the air and cut through him. Koga vanishes in a cloud of smoke and is replaced with a block of wood. He appears on the ground and the fourth shuriken comes from behind him. He whips his hand and one of his original shuriken spring and he catches it. He blocks the advance of the shuriken and with his own shuriken but he suddenly finds himself unable to move.
Koga smiles as the shuriken that he blocked falls and transforms into a hawk, completely restrained in wire and unable to move. “How do you like my technique?” The hawk looks at Koga and in the subconscious it's revealed to be Koga's consciousness stuck inside the hawk. The one speaking for Koga is Senten. Senten speaks telepathically to Koga now. “This is my Shinten Kugutsu Juin no Jutsu (Mind Puppet Switch Curse Seal Technique). Perhaps our clan's most dangerous technique.”
“Damn you...How the hell—”
“I transferred my mind into one of my summons. I can curve my technique's path, to you it looked like I simply fell unconscious. All I had to do was wait for the right time, the moment you countered my attack we switched bodies. You had no idea what I was up to.”
“Well not in so many words.” Koga says. Senten looks at the bird and suddenly feels Koga's consciousness in the animal fade and the body Senten is within disappears revealing a Shadow Clone. The hawk scours the area for Koga. The hawk hears foot steps running up the walls of the arena behind him. He turns his head only to see Koga inches away from him and he grabs Senten right off his back. Koga's feet are lined with chakra which made him faster and leap further to get to Senten. The hawk screeches and descends towards Koga as he lands. Koga holds a kunai to Senten's neck as he's still unconscious. The hawk stops as he sees this and he gently lands. “I'm not sure how your mind techniques work so I don't know if you can even hear me. I was suspicious enough with you simply laying there on top of your little bird over there. I couldn't help but take precautions. Thankfully you provided me with the cover I needed to make a clone and hide and wait for you to reveal your little trick. You're clan's ability to manipulate the minds of your opponents are pretty renown although I couldn't be certain just what you were up to.”
*Smart, using a shadow clone as a decoy and dispersing it when his mind was trapped. Senten's body wouldn't be able to return for a short while, giving him freedom to do whatever he wishes.* Kiba thinks. Kiba walks out to the middle of the filed, “Since Senten is unable to continue Koga shall proceed.” The crowd cheers and Jiraiya clinches his fist. He leaps down into the battle field and catches everybody's attention. Koga turns as Senten's birds disperse. “Jiraiya we're taking a 20minute break, you're match will start soon.”
“Why, this guy didn't even break a sweat. He's acting smug just like the others. He doesn't need any rest.” Jiraiya says annoyed. Senten's consciousness returns to his body.
“Jiraiya...what are you doing?” Hime says in one of the infirmary rooms watching the spectacle on the monitor in her room.
“He's mad.” Kana says to Koji in the stands. Koji squints his eyes looking down. “Of the four participants from our village he's the last one and none of the others have won, two of them lost to shinobi from your village.”
“He's prideful in his village. To him this is a mockery of Konoha and he's upset.” Koji says. “Koichi is the same way in that aspect.”
“Jiraiya—”
“It's fine, I still have some energy left, better to get this over with now instead of waiting.” Koga says. Jiraiya grits his teeth at Koga's arrogance.
Kiba turns to Naruto and the Hokage nods signaling Kiba to allow the fight to happen. “Alright people instead of an intermission we're going to skip to the final match up of the first round.” Kiba says. The crowd roars with applauds, excited to see this final match up.
Koga retracts his kunai from Senten's neck and Senten gets up and begins walking away. He looks Jiraiya in the eyes with shame, “Sorry Jiraiya-san, I couldn't—”
“Don't worry about it, I won't be loosing this tournament. I'll show all of these people that Konoha still is the best.” Senten gets back up into the stands and Kiba stands in the middle between Koga and Jiraiya.
“The next match, Koga vs. Jiraiya Uzumaki...Begin!” Jiraiya shoots out towards Koga at an amazing speed. Koga makes the half tiger seal and several explosive tags appear on the field in front of and around Jiraiya surrounding him. Jiraiya stops suddenly as he notices the bombs, just as they explode. *He littered the field in his last fight with explosives prepared to catch Jiraiya off guard.*
“He trapped the whole field before hand...there was no way out for Jiraiya.” Kana says.
The smoke from the explosions are still thick but suddenly the sound of an eagle resonates throughout the field and Jiraiya appears from the smoke and his movements blur as he vanishes and appears just before Koga, his right hand extended in a spear hand right into his solar plexus. Koga coughs up a small amount of blood, “So...fast.” Jiraiya takes his hand from Koga's chest and Koga falls to the ground unconscious.
“How did he get around the explosions?” Kana wonders in amazement.
“He's definitely fast enough.” Koji says. Kana turns his head to Koji, “I couldn't see his movements past his second step...” Koji turns and looks at Koichi standing watching Jiraiya nonchalantly. “Koichi can't afford to hold back with Jiraiya.”
“Koga is unable to continue, Jiraiya Uzumaki will be advancing to the semi-finals.” The crowd cheers as the end of the first round match ups have come.
“Did you see that? Took out the kid in one shot.”
“Well what do you expect, he's the Hokage's kid, I bet that wasn't even a glimpse of his real strength.”
“Yeah Jiraiya definitely deserves to be a chuunin, at the least.”
The spectators begin talking as the hour intermission is called. They speak on Jiraiya's one hit knock out, praising him as the Hokage's son. Jiraiya walks down the hall heading towards the infirmary. He's stopped by three girls who appear to block his way. “Jiraiya-san, can we have your autograph please?”
“Pretty please?!” The girls inch closer and closer to one another and towards Jiraiya.
“Look I don't have time for this.”
“Come on Jiraiya.” A voice says from behind. He turns his head and notices Koichi walking down the hall as well. “Don't break the poor girls' hearts.” Koichi brushes past Jiraiya and faces the three girls and smiles. “You know, if you want I can give you my autograph if he's being a stiff.” Koichi grins.
“No thanks, you're not as cool as Jiraiya.”
“Yeah, not as cute either.”
“Hey you guys, where did Jiraiya go?” One of the girls notices that Jiraiya is missing and they run past Koichi in pursuit. “He's so cool, he just disappeared out of nowhere.” The girls leave Koichi frozen with a grin on his face and then he suddenly turns his head back to the girls with fire in his eyes and shaking his fist.
“Damn you Jiraiya! *hmph*” Koichi continues on his way and he enters Ryoko's room. “Hey, how you doing?”
“Pretty excellent actually, those medics healed me right up.” Ryoko says. “What took you so long?”
“Oh, I was uhh, entertaining some fans you know.” Koichi laughs.
“Yeah, too bad they weren't your fans.” Ryoko says smirking.
“*tsk* Shut up!”
“*chuckles* So what did you want anyway?”
“I just came to tell my teammate she did a great job out there.” Koichi says leaning against the door.
Ryoko widens her eyes slightly, surprised at Koichi's behavior towards her. “Thanks...Koichi.”
“I mean it, definitely proved yourself out there.”
“I hope so...” Ryoko says in a depressed tone. Koichi's expression becomes more serious just after Ryoko's words.
“You draw your strength from your desire to impress your father...when are you going to realize that he's never going to appreciate anything you do—”
“Shut up! I know I can make him accept me. He wants me to be strong, I'm going to show him that I can be strong!”
“You're already strong, he doesn't see you for who you are so why do you keep trying to bend to his every wish?!”
“Because he's all I have...I don't have anybody else to depend on or anybody who depends on me...So I have to do this?!”
“I guess Koji and I don't mean a damn thing!” Ryoko widens her eyes again and looks at Koichi. “I know about what Koji did...He's been acting different lately but he does care about us, and we both care about you. You're our teammate but more importantly you're our friend Ryoko, we depend on you and you should be able to depend on us...”
Ryoko looks down and she grips her sheets, “I keep forgetting that...” Ryoko mutters to herself. “You guys have always been there for me.”
“And you forget how many times you've been there for us, I mean I can't count the number of times you've saved my ass.” Koichi laughs. Ryoko smiles and she begins to laugh slightly as well. “I know it's still important to you...I promise I'll stay by your side for whatever happens.”
“Thanks...Koichi.” The two remain in silence for a brief moment. Koji leans outside beside the door of Ryoko's room, his attempt earlier to get in the room fails as his brother leans against the door.
“I'll see you later, I gotta go talk to Lee-senpai.” Koichi opens the door and Koji's gone. Koichi heads on his way, completely unaware of his brother's presence earlier.
The intermission continues with over forty minutes left.
~Land of Earth~
Static from the radio is heard. “This is Katame, we've reached the first check point.” There's silence for a brief moment and the field and then the static picks up again.
“This is Konohamaru, team two has reached the second check point.”
“*zzzZzz* What about the Captain? *zzzZ*”
“He's cut off his communication to avoid interception. We'll be doing the same, he's given the signal that he's already infiltrated Iwagakure. He's moving on with his part in the second phase. That being said, it's time for the rest of us to do the same.” Konohamaru says.
The chuunin exams continue underway as the infiltration mission to Iwa does the same. Just as round 1 of the finals has come to an end, so too does the first phase of Konoha's espionage mission.
