the sharingan could turn into the rinnegan and itachi was in the akatsuki with orochimaru.
When itachi had orochimaru in genjutsu he could have told orochimaru to tell him how to unlock the rinnegan.
if itachi did this it would be his first step to becoming the sage he had the power to do so.
itachi could have made sasuke kill naruto when sasuke was at the valley of the end to awaken the mangekyou sharingan.
if sasuke killed naruto or saw naruto die and thought that naruto died because of him self sasuke would have been granted the mangekyou sharingan.
after this itachi could have have taken sasuke mangekyou and combined it with his own and just have gotten the eternal mangekyou sharingan.
with that power the mangekyou tech's would be less of a strain and he can use amerterasu to burn the leaf village and susanno to get yamato and get the cells of hashirama.
this would have granted itachi the elder son and younger son powers.so itachi could have been the next sage of six path this could have really happen and yes itachi could have put orochimaru in genjutsu and force him to speak of the rinnegan activation,
and could have made sasuke kill naruto by false belief or by him actually doing it.
with eternal mangekyou sharingan itachi he could pass threw the leaf and find yamato to get the cells,
then itachi can get the sage of six path treasured tools and be the next sage of six path's.
so do you think itachi really had the chance to become the sage of six path's.
