Ryu is portrayed as a young Japanese man whose basic attire consists of medium-length brown hair, brown eyes, a long red headband, a white karate gi with the sleeves ripped off at the shoulders, completely bare feet, and a black belt. He often wears red sparring gloves on both hands and attached to his belt he has many pouches for various ninja tools.
Personality
Ryu is usually a silent, humble, serious individual whose severity is often juxtaposed against the light-hearted, fiery persona of his best friend and companion, Goju. He travels the globe with a stern nature, often appearing to others as boring or detached. On rare occasion, Ryu shows a very bad sense of humor. Ryu's overarching goal in the Ninja World is to become a total master of his fighting style and to defeat all those that challenge him. To this end, Ryu plays the part of the wandering warrior, and takes both his travels and his training very seriously. Although he appears to be aloof and unemotional, Ryu is actually a kind and good-hearted person. He respects others with skills equal to his own and holds heroic figures of Ninja's of the past in high regard.

As he has progressed, it seems that Ryu has developed a somewhat more friendly personality. He is still very quiet and reserved, but is willing to greet people with a smile and some kind advice, very much like his master in the Inuzuka clan.There is, however, a dark side to Ryu. His drive to improve himself, no matter the difficulty, can sometimes develop into a drive to win and to be the best, no matter what the cost, as these two goals are so dangerously similar. Ryu's desire to be better can sometimes make his advice to his defeated opponents seem more arrogant and judgmental, though he is fundamentally well-intentioned. In times when his inner darkness threatens to overcome him, Ryu relies on his friends to keep him grounded and snap him out of it.

Background info
History
Ryu was born into the Inuzuka clan of Konoha and at the age of 5 he encountered his ninken in an abnormal way. It was the day before his 5th birthday and Ryu was extremely nervous about the next day, you see in the Inuzuka clan the ninken picks the ninja not the other way around and Ryu was worried that no ninken would choose him. Making him an outcast and rariy in the Inuzuka clan Ryu was so frightened by this that he would go spend the night in the woods in order to become more animalistic and therefore have a better chance of being chosen. When Ryu's parent had fallen asleep, Ryu snuck out of his bedroom window and made his way to the forest outside of the village. He snuck past the ninja guards at the gate and began his overnight training in the forest.
He swam through the river trying to catch fish, he rubbed dirt and mud through his clothes and hair and he climed a tree to rest in for the night. It was when he was sitting in the tree that he heard them, wild wolves and some outcast ninkens howling, talking to each other. Ryu sprung up, howled back and listened. The wolves howled again and they sounded a lot closer, excited Ryu attempted to howl back but as he did he lost his footing and tumbled out of the tree, knocking himself out on the ground. He was waken but a wet feeling on his face, he opened his eyes and looked up and was surprised to see a pack of silver wolves staring at him.
It was a baby wolf born from a ninken dog licking him, no more than a few days old. He reached up and patted the baby and it barked happily and before Ryu realised it the other wolves were gone leaving him with the baby. From then on Ryu and his new partner Goju were inseparable training together day and night to get stronger.
