I just wanted to say, many of use the 'retard' as an insult while not knowing the meaning of it, or just ignore the meaning and just insult someone with that word. When you call someone retarded it only shows that someone really being 'retarded' is bad. I'll be honest I used use the word 'retard' as a insult. But, now I stopped now.


I believe calling someone a 'retard' doesn't only affect the person you're saying it to, but it also affects the people who are actually really mentally disabled. Also, we all know people who are 'retarded' or mentally disabled people didn't have a choice.

Sorry if I rushed this. This is all based on my opinion.

I hope I don't get flamed on this.

Nerd has a ton of different definitions
Calling someone an idiot is a bad thing. Because when people use the word idiot in a arguement they usually base it off 1 little bit of intelligence.
For example:
- I could be good at Maths
- But terrible at English

So what gives you the right to tell me I'm stupid? Just because I have grammar problems? Or spelling mistakes, ( This is not directed at you, just an example )

I have a cousin that's mentally retarded and i have to confess i am guilty of using it as an insult. i don't use it anymore because i have realized it is a cruel thing to do because people with that disease can't help it. my cousin used to be more normal btw.

I understand what you are saying however retard can be used differently. Retard has two definitions so to say that using it in one situation means that its offensive in both is wrong. If i was calling you a retard does this mean that im aiming at mentally retard people as well? no im using it in a different and correct context completely. Take the word bitch for example it also has two definitions. if someone called their female dog a bitch does that mean they are offending the dog simultaneously?and if i was to call someone a bitch would i be labeling them a female dog simultaneously?....no. now if i was to say that your mentally retarded and you are/not infact mentally retarded that is offensive because if you were i would be making fun of your disability and if you were not then i would be labeling you incorrectly while using it in an improper and insulting manner. its completely different because retard has two meanings (like bitch)compared to mentally retarded which only pertains to one specific group of people.

In all retard has two meaning and both are correct.It might not be polite to call anyone a retard however its still correct to use it in that manner. Just because you use one of its meanings does not mean that you mean the other. I fixed the ploblem by simply not insulting people at all. Even if someones flaming me online, or its an in person argument, I generally just respond in a kind manner, no reason for me to amp up the situation when I could easily end it instead, if I'm not mad, then it would be very difficult for them to remain so. Remove the logs from the fire and it goes out.
