A friend came up with this idea and asked me to post it on here. Tell me what you think: It's possible that Kishi didn't even intend Sai to be a real character, but rather as a way to demonstrate the extent of Danzo's power. The whole Root no-emotions thing shows that he has immense influence (And, as is suggested, power), but Sai's eventual rehabilitation into society shows that defeating him is very possible.

I can see how Sai can act as a metaphor, but that doesn't make him any less of a real person in the story.

Friend's Response: I see what you mean, I worded that a little badly, What I meant was that Sai's main purpose was the metaphor about Danzo. His actual character development, while substantial, wasn't as important to the story.

I see what you mean. I believe Sai serves what is perhaps a more important purpose as an analogue to Sasuke. Sai and Sasuke share a lot of traits, especially with how they get along in relation to Naruto. Sai's more positive friendship gives an alternate look at how things could have been.

Also, why doesn't your friend just become a member of the base?

Friend: I actually am a member. I just forgot about it until after Thewargoeson posted my idea.
