Now, I could be wrong here, but it's believed that if your soul has been sealed by RDS, you can't be brought back via Edo Tensei. However, if you go back to when Orochimaru fought Hiruzen during the Chunin Exams and used Edo Tensei to summon both Hashirama and Tobirama and a third edo, admittedly an unknown edo, but widely believed to be Minato. Hiruzen was quick to make sure he stopped the summoning of the unknown edo but it appears as if Hiruzen knew who it was.

Now if it wasn't Minato, who else could it have been?

Just about to post this. The procedure should have failed though since the soul was sealed, so that was sort of a plot hole.

That's why beleive that the scroll Suigetsu and Jugo found contains something that can bring back those that are sealed in RDS.

It was believed originally Sandime had the power to stop the summon. Cool. However now Kishi is simply saying it would have failed anyway. Lame. But whatever just takes some power away from the third hokage I guess. It was supposed to be battle royale with all the hokages and Kishi plainly stated it was the fourth in the coffin.

If you won't believe what the others have posted above, then I shall answer your question on who it could have been. It could have been Orochimaru's 'was-never-shown-in-the-manga' son.

But then, had he not stopped it and the coffin still appeared, it would have just failed and not worked anyway. So I think it is both kind of the third still stopped it, would have failed anyway.

You'd have to think that Orochimaru would have tested it first, almost like Kabuto had sort of done when he had demonstrated the technique to Tobi

I'm going to say 1.Plot and 2. Most of all, Orochimaru already had the 1st and 2nd Hokage I'm sure he thought he was invincible plus the third was closer maybe to the first and second so in his lackadaisical ways he didn't even bother testing the 4ths and just tried it on the spot (again see plot). because obviously having the 4th there would have been overkill (and Orochimaru had no knowledge of RDS).

Alright, I can see how that would work. Normally I don't question these things and just chalk it up to being Kishi does what Kishi wants. I just finally got curious enough to see what answers other people could come up with, and I certainly applaud you on yours.
