Agreed, it certainly depends on the skill of the user. However, I look at them like tools. The byakugan can enhance one's fighting style and sensory abilities by quite a bit, and since people have different fighting styles the byakugan could be used for different advantages.
The sharingan seems more like a dependent weapon. It doesn't really enhance your own abilities or allow you to combine and build upon them, it just gives you techniques and the ability to copy, predict, etc.. In simple terms, the sharingan adds weapons and abilities to your arsenal and the byakugan enhances what you've already got.
