LOTR has to be undoubtably the most epic trilogy ever and I'm including the original Star Wars there. I haven't seen the latter three films you listed, but they definitely deserve the praise they got. I chose the Avengers personally because I found it more entertaining to watch than LOTR, mainly cause it takes four hours to watch just one of themxd

It also has to do with the movie performances. Both did an outstanding job in casting the right actors, but I think the Avengers did just a little bit better, especially in Ruffalo's case. I don't think a better actor's been picked for a role since they made Heath Ledger the Joker.

actually the best version of lotr are the extended dvd/blu rays, they are awesome and last for about 4 hrs each, the longer the better, hope they add more footage they have for future releases

also Avengers is in no way better than LoTR, i have to do this i would have been quiet if you said the godfather or a movie like that was better but i simply have to do this now
- the casting is too ... well hollywood
- the story is not all that good and most of it is too much like transformers 3 anyway (too much space invasions lately)
- there are no epic scenes whatsoever
- where there should be epic scenes theres cheap and forced humour
- even the storyline that actually exists is ''overshadowed'' by the action
- its a cheap thrill like transformers, x men or ironman, but nowhere close to the rest of the movies up there
- music in LoRT is simply superb
- the adaption of the books was one of the best ever
- Peter Jackson is a film genius
- the green and warm feel of middle earth is much better done than the places in the avengers (spaceship, that tower was horrible, ...)
- the bad guys from LoTR were awesome and the their places really horrifying, in avengers they looked like star wars filler villains

I don't think you can compare The Avengers with the classics like The Godfather and The Schindler's List. Personally, I think the Schindler's List is the best out of the list, because it makes you cry whoever you are.

I've only seen the first film's extended version. They actually had to put all the extended films on two discs each, that's how long they werexd At least, the version I saw was like that.

As for your contradiction, keep in mind that I did say these were personal feelings. I did find Avengers more thrilling, but that's me. I couldn't possibly disagree and say that they're not all around better films, cause they are. The trilogy was practically MADE to be epic. And yes, I was also disappointed about the Chitauri, though mainly cause I saw the Ultimate Avengers cartoon films.

The only thing I'm not budging on is the performances. As I said, the casting was perfect for both of them, but I still think they did better. And you can't say that LOTR didn't have a mainstream cast too, can you? Seriously, Ian McKellan, Hugo Weaving, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood? And these are the ones who had big names before the first film.

I always thought that the longer the movie the better, it doesn't end so quickly and its pure Epicness
