Although what happened on the night of the uchiha massacre was terrible, the two main people involved (except tobi) were somewhat justified.
Itachi: I think its obvious tht itachi didnt want to kill his clan and his family. He shows remorse and tears before he strikes his parents down. But think of the situation; Itachi had already seen 1 war, he saw many innocent ninja's fall. So itachi;s options were either exterminate his clan, or help them fight the leaf village and watch another war unfold only to see more innocent life's be lost. Each one is a unbelievably hard choice and as we saw in the last chapter itachi was having trouble deciding what to do. does he betray his family, or his home land. If i had to guess i'd say he thot of them as equally terrible things. until danzo brings up sasuke. Once itachi realizes he'd also have to kill his beloved brother, betraying his clan became not as bad as betraying the village. So think of it this way: kill uchiha(Without sasuke living)=betraying village. Kill uchiha (with sasuke sasuke living)<betraying the leaf. in short it became worse to destroy the leaf village so itachi chose the logical choice which is the only way he cud deal with what he did psychologically.
Danzo: theres alot of hate on danzo for what he did, manipulated itachi, stopped shisui from stopping the coup. But he was justified in all those things. First he stopped shisui probably bcuz he wasnt sure whether or not shishu wud tell them to stop the coup, or continue on with it. so to stop him he took his eye. Now yes there was probably some personal greed behind it, like he wanted shisui's eye for kotoamatsukami but it was also to protect the village.
With itachi; Danzo proposed tht him, the elders, and some anbu shud destroy the uchiha. But the same way itachi did, danzo weighed his options logically. Fight the uchiha himself and probably lose countless anbu, or have 1 man do it who he knew cud complete it. All danzo ever does is think logically about whats best for his village and having itachi do it was best for the village. But he knew itachi wudnt just kill his family on the spot, so danzo decided to add some leverage, sweeten the crap a little. He said he wud spare sasuke's life. And as i stated before tht wud make itachi see tht destroying the uchiha is the more logical choice. Danzo only wanted to protect his village, and to do so he needed itachi to complete the deed
