actually I just think shadow clones are a variation of basic clones, they don't really involve shadow.

My point is no Nara clan member has ever been seen using it. And wouldn't Shikamaru know a decent amount of Nara jutsus? Especially one as basic as Shadow Clone Jutsu? The only connection is the name. Shadow Clone and Shadow Possession Jutsus aren't even related.
