On topic; To build background, from their past, goals are set etc. From those aims, the characters are built on it, allowing them to get stronger, making the plot more interesting.

This is more of a Japanese theme... But it applies to America to an extent too.

Take Superman for instance....

But anyway. It seems that the Japanese give more plot to their heroes personalities than they do here in America. Always a good thing. It gives them a reason to be how they are. Naruto wanted everyone's recognition so he adopted his "don't give up" personality.

Now on to your question, it's because characters that suffered in the past are more motivated, and have a natural inclination towards peace and love and that kind of stuff (like Naruto) or have strong hatred feelings (like Sasuke) either way they have more reasons behind their actions.
Someone that has everything will never be as motivated as someone who either didn't have or lost it. (Take a look at Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura)
