Chapter 48: The Finals Begin
The sun is young in the day over Konoha. As the morning progresses the village is already in a state of excitement and anticipation over the day's final round of the Chuunin Exams. The month training period for the genin has ended and the chuunin candidates are as prepared as they're going to get for these exams.
Wealthy and important people make their way into the village as the morning goes on. Daimyou, wealthy families, ambassador shinobi from other countries alike begin to fill the stadium in specially reserved VIP section while the simple common populous of people from Konoha fill the rest of the stadium.
“Geez, where are they?” Moegi and Udon stand in a room within the stadium. Moegi crosses her arms and taps her foot impatiently. “*sigh* They're always late for one reason or another.” She says shaking her head.
Just then the door opens and large lion sized white dog with a gray streak down it's head and back walks in, startling Moegi to the point she squeals. “Calm down.” A voice says from behind the dog. Kiba enters the room after Akamaru and he comes before Moegi and Udon.
“Kiba, you and that damn dog...wait, what are you doing here?” Moegi asks curiously.
“I'm the replacement proctor for the exams today.” Kiba says.
“What about Konohamaru?” Udon asks.
Kiba's face goes a little south and it is stern. “I can't talk much about it, something's going on with Iwagakure right now and we don't know what it is. Something came in this morning, which is why Naruto and Konohamaru are running late. Naruto will be here in a few but Konohamaru is going on a mission with Sai at the moment but we can't interrupt these exams. Naruto sent me here to get things set up, we'll start when he gets here but for now we just need to make sure the security detail is ready and all the genin are present so we can begin.” Akamaru lets out a deep bark and Udon and Moegi nod obediently.
~Inside the Stadium~
The stadium is nearly packed with people and shinobi proctors at every end of the stadium. Koji and Kana sit in the middle section of the stadium looking around them. “Such an outcome.” Koji says shifting his head around the stadium.
“Yeah, it's always like this when the exams come around.” Kana says nonchalantly. “Normally it would be filled by now, we began installing monitors all over the village for the people who couldn't get in.”
“I've never watched the exams before.”
“Yeah, I bet you thought you'd be in them huh?” Kana teases.
“I never really did care about rank, I figured I'd advance when it was time for me to do so.” Koji says.
“Oh...I was just teasing.” Kana says with some remorse. “But haven't you ever wanted to get the credit you deserve for getting stronger? I mean there's a great sense of pride and self confidence when you become a chuunin. Haven't you ever wanted that?”
Koji makes a small smile and looks down. “I've never been that kind of person actually. I don't have too many of those desires, there's only a few things in this world I want to make my life an enjoyable one. I tend to focus more on those. Becoming a chuunin or jounin...has almost no significance to me.” Koji's tone is rather sad but unselfish.
Kana looks away from him with a saddened look. *Koji...you're miserable.* Kana feels Koji's hurt aura around him as the solemn smile remains on his face. Several minutes go by before the stadium is completely filled.
One of the proctors around the around the middle sections talks to his partner beside him. “All the genin are here, they're about to start the exams.”
Over near the entrance to the Kiba stands in the shadow of the doorway looking up at the top of the arena where the Hokage sits. “Come on Naruto...” Kiba whispers to himself. Just then a large burst of orange smoke appears near the top of the arena and from the smoke Naruto appears in the Hokage garb with his tied around his neck hanging on the back.
“Sorry I'm late everybody, just had to take care of a few things! Is everybody ready?!” Naruto shouts, projecting his voice over the entire stadium. The crowd inside the village applauds largely and the screens over in the rest of the village project Naruto and several citizens all over the village in restaurants, pubs, and all over cheer as if at a sporting event. “Alright then, without further ado, lets begin!” the cheers get louder and Kiba turns around and faces the genin.
“Alright we're on you guys...” Kiba stops and looks over at Koichi and he begins to laugh.
“What's so funny?” Koichi asks and he notices several of the other genin laughing as well.
“You been hanging around Lee kid?” Kiba asks.
“Yeah! What of it?” Koichi says defensively crossing his arms.
“Nothing, that explains everything. Alright lets go you guys.” Koichi notices the other genin still snickering with the exception of Masaomi and Koga.
“He's not getting past me.” Masaomi says to Koga. “Not this time.” The 11 genin all enter the arena standing side by side.
“Alright you guys listen up, I'm going to explain the rules for this exam. This is a simple one on one tournament style match up as explained already. You may use every and any technique in your arsenal to fight against your opponent. However the goal is to subdue them and render them unable to continue and I mean that as restrictive as possible. Avoid killing each other and more importantly try to keep me out of it because I really don't want to get involved in the cross fire because of squabbles, got it?!” All of them nod and Kiba turns around and addresses the crowd. “I am Kiba Inuzuka and I will be the proctor for this last exam. The match-ups have been made and have been displayed all over the village for several weeks now. There is no time limit for the match-ups they will end when I deem one part unable to continue. There will be a 20minute intermission between each of the first round battles and an hour intermission before the start of the semi-finals and the finals. Now without further delay, our first match up is Koichi Shichiyo of Sunagakure and Masaomi Iga of Sunagakure.”
The rest of the genin leap away into the front part of the stands reserved for the tournament participants. Akamaru walks to one end of the arena and plops himself down on the ground and yawns.
In the stands Koji looks down at his brother and Kana snickers while he sighs. “Koichi, what are you waring?”
Koichi stands waring green jumpsuit identical to the one Lee has on under his vest. Koichi also dons a headband with the symbol for “Youth” on it and his Suna headband around his waist. Koichi looks up into the stands and looks up at Lee who gives him the thumbs up and Koichi smiles anxiously at him. Koji looks over to Lee and drops his head.
Kiba gets between the two genin as they stand facing each other intensively. The extremely hostile look coming from Masaomi is mirrored by Koichi's. Kiba notices both looks on the two young shinobi, “You guys are going to give me trouble aren't you? *sigh* Whatever it is I don't care just know if either of you make me step in here, you're both going to regret it.” Kiba turns his back and walks over to Akamaru and he lays down on the old dogs stomach as he raises his hand “Begin.”
~In the Land of Earth~
Three large birds fly high in the sky just barley touching the clouds above. Six shinobi sit atop the birds hidden from any possible sight. They all ware full Anbu gear as they fly over the Earth Country.
“We don't have a lot of time, you were all briefed on the general task of this mission but not the entire thing nor its reasons.” Sai says. Konohamaru sits behind Sai as they travel on the birds. The other four shinobi look at their leaders and listen carefully. “A few weeks ago Iwagakure began an unscheduled drilling advance off the course of their normal schedule. Not only that but they progressed well past the boarders and into the territory of the Land of Rain. Then again only a few days ago they changed their patterns and did the same thing with the Land of Grass.”
“Did they get within the proximity of either Ame or Kusa?” One of the shinobi asks.
“Yes, Ame's leader reported it to us, they were only 5 kilometers outside the village. As for Kusa, they made it only meters from the bridge leading to the western gate.” Sai says.
“Did either military's take any courses of action?” Another shinobi asks.
“Amegakure prepared a small division half way between Iwa's forces but only as a defensive measure and Iwa ended up retreating after the 5km mark. However with Kusa still going through it's civil war, there was little stopping Iwa's forces from advancing deep into the territory of Kusa's Central Alliance. The only way we found out about Iwa's advancement was the precautions we took after the Ame incident. However we came dangerously close to breaking our neutrality in Kusa's war when Central Alliance thought our spies along with Iwa's large force were working together with the Rebellion Force.” Konohamaru mentions. “The incident with Amegakure wouldn't have been so bad due to the close proximity of the schedule but they advanced into the country without proper authorization and within village jurisdiction. Then, again with Kusa in close repetition.”
“Did Naruto-sama ask the Tsuchikage about this?” another shinobi asks.
“No, due to the fragile state with Kabuto we couldn't afford to. But that's besides the point, Iwa broke the Treaties of Territory twice when they proceeded too far into foreign shinobi territory without authorization. Iwa's first course of action should have been to explain their reasoning with the countries they broke the treaty with but not a word has been translated to either Amegakure or Kusagakure to the best of our knowledge.” Sai says.
“To the best of our knowledge?”
Sai looks down with a worrying look. “Kabuto re-emerged a year ago and freed Sasuke Uchiha and we haven't heard of anything else from him until the exams when he attempted to kidnap Mika Yuhi. We are allied with Amegakure and are neutral to Kusagakure, however we've put Ame on the underside of our treaties, keeping them out of major affairs, especially between Suna. The Jomae village infiltrated Sunagakure and with their foreign policy dealing with the exchange in information for other commodities it makes us uneasy. We have no idea of how far Jomae's info on either of us since the Suna incident goes. Kabuto strikes while the exams are going on as well as Iwa's odd behavior and also Kirigakure is holding some secrets, keeping their own isolationism in check for the most part. The Great Nations are all reserved around each other and Naruto feels that Kabuto is using this to his advantage...and I believe him. That being said, even allies are hard to trust in these dire times. Kabuto is not a shinobi to sleep on in the slightest and we can't afford the sanctity of the Great Nations to decay if we are to sustain peace long enough for us to come together and deal with Kabuto.” Sai lectures.
“That brings us to the mission at hand,” Konohamaru says. “Naruto has assigned us to infiltrate Iwagakure to ascertain records of their movements and any other information that pertains to a month ago and possibly anything preceding that, which would give cause or motive elsewhere for such actions. The six of us were chosen specifically for our skill sets.”
“You're names for this mission will be Kitsune, Katame, Sho, and Dai.” Sai says to the four other shinobi. “There are three main phases that will happen before we enter Iwagakure.”
“Each one of us will be dropped off in a designated location around Iwa. Iwagakure has increased their guard around the Land of Earth so we first need to get past them. Kitsune, you will be dropped at the edge of the boarder south of Iwagakure and you will proceed north towards the village through the heavier set of guard. You're abilities in stealth can nearly rival that of the Nidaime Tsuchikage. You should have no problems making it to the check point.” Konohamaru states. “Katame, you shall be dropped off 6km in from the northern boarder of the Land of Earth and proceed to the check point from there. You're Byakugan allows gives you enhanced clarity. There are far more traps in that direction so your eyes will allow you to take the best routs to avoid them...Sho you'll be dropped north west of the village. You have a more versatile skill set then I do. The mountainous terrain has always acted as a natural defense for intruders but you should be able to handle it no problem. Finally Dai, you'll be dropped off north east. It's an open field with several guards. However you've learned from one of the Seven Swordmen. You're Hidden Mist technique and silent killing ability is right on par with that of any of the swordsmen. Not to mention your speed and accuracy with projectiles will allow you to take out several shinobi in seconds is admirable.”
“Konohamaru and I will be dropped south west and south east. There are two check points. Check point one is at the northern gate of Iwa. Katame, Sho and Dai will take that position. The second check point is at the eastern gate. Kitsune and Konohamaru will be proceeding to that check point. Keep the frequencies on channle K4 when everybody reaches the check points we will contact one another for the second phase of the plan.”
“Sai-sama, what about you?” Kitsune asks.
“I will be proceeding directly into the village from my position through the western gate. I should make it in before all of you make it to their check points. We don't have much time. Our cover is the chuunin exams. The day after things begin to pick up. Our goal is to finish this before the exams end today. Understood?” All the shinobi nod their heads understanding. “Good, now...we begin.” The six shinobi put on their masks and put on their robes. Sai wares the only cream colored robe to symbolize his leadership in the mission while the others don black hooded robes. The birds begin to descend and the deadline for their mission begins with the sound of the first match of the finals beginning.
~Konoha Stadium~
As Kiba begins the match both Koichi and Masaomi continue to stare at each other with strong hostility. Naruto sits at the top of the stadium with two Anbu guards beside him. He leans his arm on his leg thigh and puts his fist on his cheek as he watches the exams. *Sai, Konohamaru, I'm counting on you guys. Take care of that while I take care of these exams.*
The Finals begin as well as the Iwagakure's Infiltration.

I'm feeling generaous which is why I'm planning on releasing another chapter tomorrow. Even though it's summer I'm still going to keep a the two chapter a week thing, with the ocassional bonus chapters and such. Anyway there will be a poll, as I said about the Chuunin exam match ups. You will tell me who you think is going to win by your vote, the votes will end when I release my chapter that will have the decision already made ^^ Anyway tell me what you like about the chapter or disliked.
