I think he means all 5 kage at the same time. Not individually. Madara said only Hashi could beat him. that doesn't mean he could take on every other character in the manga at the same time :flaw:

In this whole fight madara had he not had the rinnegan + mokuton he would´ve died 3 times in that whole fight, being edo helped him alot.
The kages were close to dying yes but Madara basically died 3 times already.
