Background:
Extemely long background, so I'm putting it in a spoiler.
Ninjutsu
Due to the fact that Orochimaru desired to learn every jutsu in the world, it's no surprise that he has such a large amount of jutsu and his ninjutsu capabilities are nearly off the charts.
Offensively speaking, Orochimaru had the ability to create some devastating blows, even if it is a simple technique, it can prove to be fatal due to the fact that Orochimaru is preforming the jutsu. A perfect example of this would be Wind Release: Giant Breakthrough in which a genin or a low-strengthed ninja would use this technique to do things such as redirect kunai or things of that nature. Although if Orochimaru uses it, it has the potential to do things such as knock down trees.
Defensively speaking, Orochimaru has the capability to block some of the strongest moves with near ease. For example, the Summoning: Triple Rashōmon has a near impenetrable defense in which the first gate takes the attack head on, the second gate serves to reduce the power of the attack, meanwhile the third gate is supposed to stop the attack all together. It should be noted that these gates aren't impenetrable, it just takes an extremely strong attack to break the gates, such as a TBB.
Another thing is that Orochimaru was one of the three people who could use the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation technique which allowed Orochimaru to bring dead people back to life. This technique was developed by the Second Hokage, although it was never perfected and labeled as a Forbidden Jutsu due to the technique going against morals. With this jutsu, Orochimaru was able to bring back the First and Second Hokage to fight along side with him and the only way to defeat these reincarnations was to seal their souls.

Side note: Sorry if I left out some things here and there. I don't know every single thing about Orochimaru, and this was definitely a good learning experience for me.
Why do I do these analysis'? Because it helps me retain the information about a character more when I write it down in an organized fashion like this. It's basically a learning experience.
Why do I make a thread like this? Because it's very easy to organize information with the setup (spoilers, glows, links, etc etc.). + Maybe someone will be interested to read this and learn a thing or two about Orochimaru. On top of that, I think maybe it's a nice break from the repetitive threads we see everyday. My opinion though :shrug:
As a child, Orochimaru was teammates with Jiraya and Tsunade, having Hiruzen as his team leader. At a young age, Orochimaru stood out among his generation as a prodigy through his talent, intelligence, and determination. During the Second Shinobi War, Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraya all fought against Hanzo and lived. Since Hanzo was so surprised, he gave the three of them the name "Three Legendary Shinobi" (Densetsu no Sannin) or what we like to call them, "The Legendary Sannin". On their way back to Konoha, the three of them ran into three orphans which we know as Konan, Nagato, and Yahiko. Orochimaru suggested he kill them to spare them the cruelty the world has to offer, although Jiraya intervened and said he'd train them so the three of them could defend themselves.
After Team Hiruzen disbanded, Orochimaru joined the ANBU, a member of the Root who worked directly under Danzo. During one mission, Orochimaru ran into Kabuto, and after seeing Kabutos great medicinal prowess, Orochimaru asked if Kabuto wanted to be a ninja. Kabuto declined and Orochimaru then stated that it was a waste of talent. After accompanying Danzo to the Konoha Orphanage to speak with Nono, he and another shinobi subtly threatened to rob the orphanage and kidnap the orphans if she refused the mission. Five years after Kabuto had volunteered to accompany them when they demanded an orphan to replace the Root member that had been killed recently was on a mission in Iwagakure and had his cover blown, Orochimaru appeared to him once again. This time, Orochimaru took Kabuto to his hideout and explained to him how Kabuto and Nono were supposed to kill each other because of the elaborate information they had gained. Orochimaru exclaimed that "mutual kill" would be the best way Root would go about handling the situation. From then on, Kabuto worked with Orochimaru, assisting him with laboratory experiments, while also taking note of his actions.
Tsunade said that even as a child, Orochimaru always had bad intentions, and this was caused by the death of Orochimarus parents. At some point after Orochimaru lost his parents, he and Hiruzen were at their grave. Orochimaru spotted a white snake next to his parents' grave and Hiruzen said that the white snake was a symbol of good fortune and rebirth. After this event, Orochimaru was always inspired by the white snake and began to work with forbidden techniques and desired to learn every ninjutsu there was. After Hiruzen became the Hokage, Orochimaru became a sensei and took on Anko as his student. Shortly after this, he took Anko and eight other children to the Cursed Seal of Heaven. Orochimaru did indeed want to become the Fourth Hokage, but he had different reasons for doing so. Hiruzen became the Hokage because of his undying love for the village, meanwhile Orochimaru wanted to become Hokage for one reason, power. Although, since Hiruzen saw the mindset of Orochimaru, he chose Minato to be the next Hokage. This gave Orochimaru no incentive to stay in the Hidden Leaf, and for that reason he left the village to gain more knowledge and power.
As time went on, Orochimaru began capturing fellow Konoha students and peers, using them as test subjects for his experiments. He mostly experimented on a way to gain immortality due to the fact that no person could learn every jutsu in a mere lifetime. Some time later, Orochimaru also kidnapped sixty children and injected all of them with the First Hokages DNA, in hopes of recreating the Wood Release. Although he had to leave the village due to suspicion of where his hideout was, Orochimaru assumed all of his test subjects died. Later, Orochimaru conducted a similar experiment on Danzo, and gave him the DNA of the first Hokage and multiple Sharingan.
After Orochimaru left the village, he joined an elite missing-nin organization called the Akatsuki. Although it's not sure what happened while Orochimaru was in the Akatsuki, it was stated that he and Sasori had a great deal of respect for each other. Also, the two had been noted to do a lot of "good deeds" with their time together. As Itachi just joined the Akatsuki as well, Orochimaru saw this as a great opportunity to steal the Sharingan, and shortly attempted to attack Itachi, although Itachi used his Sharingan to reverse his attack and cut off his left hand. This caused Orochimaru to leave the Akatsuki and in this time, he acquired a new body. Due to this incident, Sasori held a grudge against Orochimaru, and sent Kabuto as a brainwashed spy to go see what Orochimaru is up to. Although Orochimaru realized Kabuto was brain washed and undid it. This reverted Kabuto back as Orochimarus right hand man, and the two of them made their own village together called the Hidden Sound Village. In this village, Orochimaru often tortured his prisoners and used them as test subjects, on top of that he also did extensive research on weapons such as the Totsuka blade.
As the Kaguya clan attacked the Hidden Sound, Orochimaru met Kimimaro, and since Kimimaro was the sole survivor of the invasion, Orochimaru took him on as his sensei in hopes of using Kimimaro as his vessel. At some point, Orochimaru also researched senjutsu and attempted to obtain it, although it failed due to the fact that his body wasn't able to absorb natural energy.

On top of this, when Orochimaru is hit, blood falls out, but this blood actually contains poison. Within minutes, this poison would paralyze the enemy making it easy for Orochimaru to kill anyone. Even if he's hit and cut in half, Orochimaru can then reform himself back to his original state, making Orochimaru one of the harder enemies to defeat.

Not much can really be said about Orochimarus chakra, although there's one thing that I'd like to point out in particular about his chakra.
