Background: When Sai was a child, his parents left him for reasons unknown, and was recruited into Root, which is a secret branch in the ANBU which is most likely for higher ranked shinobi within the ANBU. In Root, Sai was conditioned and raised to have absolutely no personality, no personal connections, and no name. The codename "Sai" was given to him for joining Team Seven. Sai's real name is unknown as of now. Sai was very interested in art, and when Shin, a fellow Root member, saw Sai's drawings, Shin encouraged his talent and the two became very close. Throughout time, Sai viewed Shin as an older brother. The only bad part was, Sai and Shin were scheduled to fight each other to the death, part of the Roots regulations which serves as a final act of killing all emotions. Although, before the fight occured Shin died from an unknown sickness and further Root training repressed all memories of Shin, making Sai completely forget about his seemingly older brother. Before Shins death, Sai created a picture book in which Sai would draw all the opponents Shin and Sai had fought and defeated throughout their time together, and at the center page there would be a picture of Sai and Shin holding hands. Although since Sai repressed his memories of Shin, he forgot about what he'd draw in the center page but could never have the emotional strength to throw out the book. But after Sai and Naruto got to know each other, Sai remembered what he'd draw in the center page, giving Sai the first shown emotion throughout the series, a smile.

Jutsu

Sai's ninjutsu is his main form of attack and defense, and he uses his ninjutsu other various situations. Danzo held him in such high regards that he believed Sai had the ability to single handedly(bad spelling) take out Sasuke Uchiha who was hiding in one of Orochimarus various hideouts. Sai uses Super Beast Imitating Drawing which allows him to do a magnitude of different strategies when confronted with a situation. In the past, Sai has produced many things through his drawings which can range from birds to dogs. These drawings are somewhat similar to Deideras creations with his clay.
This allows Sai to be any kind of fighter, long ranged or short ranged. These aren't weak beasts either. For example, in the beginning of the war, Sai got behind Sasori and Deidera while they were both flying on a clay bird and Sai summoned very large two human-looking beasts which punched them from behind. These two beasts had enough physical strength to send both of them flying off of their bird and crash into the floor. This shows that although Sais creations are just drawings, they have enough power to deal serious damage.

Using his Ninjutsu for fighting is one of the last things Sai does. Sai usually uses his beasts for tasks such as scouting out an area (the mice in Orochimarus hideout), to bind an enemy with snakes (Sai used snakes on Sasuke to bind him), use as transportation for him or for multiple people (Ambush unit flying on birds), or even use his beasts for extremes such as sealing techniques (As he did to Fuguki), or even write a message, then turn those words into mice and have them travel to a teammate as a way to transfer intelligence. This makes Sai a top priority on a squad because of the uses he ranges from.

Taijutsu
Although it's not Sai's preferred form of attack, Sai is somewhat capable of fighting in a purely Taijutsu fight.
Sai is usually seen holding a Tantō, which is a small katana with a flat end (looks as if the point is cut off) is used mainly for cutting or for defense. Although we don't see Sai use the Tantō too much, it can be assumed he has experience in Kenjutsu (swordsplay)
There are various examples that prove Sai has proficient Taijutsu capabilities. For example, Sai was able to react and block Narutos attempt to stab him with a kunai very easily even though he had his scroll on his lap, and managed to capture Yamato during training. He also was able to capture Kabuto Yakushi very easily and block Sasuke Uchiha's attempt to stab Naruto, Sasuke even commented that he blocked the attack the best way possible. One last example is that he was able to break Shin's neck with a flying knee kick in mid-air during the war.

Intelligence

Throughout the series, Sai showed very subtle hints that he is indeed quite intelligent.
Sai has a large amount of basic knowledge as it is, because Sai was in the higher up ANBU, otherwise known as the Root. Here, Sai got personal information from Danzo, and also had a bingo book. Meaning that Sai had detailed information on every famous shinobi to date. Sai always craved knowledge, he's seen always reading books about various topics, varying from love to possibly fighting techniques. Sai also has the intelligence and reflexes to evade and counter enemies in the most proficient way possible. On top of that, Sai is a smooth talker, able to manipulate people in a way that it turns to his advantage. Sai is also very sly, he fooled Kabuto for example, which served as a way to get into Orochimarus hideout.

Chakra
Indeed, there is nothing special about Sai's chakra capabilities, but I'll tell you what I've observed from his fights in the past.
Although Sai doesn't have a lot of chakra, he doesn't have an under average amount of chakra either. Never in any fight has Sai run out of chakra and has collapsed from running out of stamina. Given he didn't use too much chakra in the first place, it's good to see that Sai can refrain from wasting chakra as much as he can.
Sai's chakra control is not too bad either. He's able to channel his chakra through a pen and onto paper while in the middle of drawing. Then, the very second his pen leaves the paper, the drawing comes to life and changes size, becoming much larger than it looked on paper. (speculating) most likely the size depends on the amount of chakra the user put into making the drawing.
