Commonly Proposed Candidates for Tobi's Identity

Tobirama Senju
You must be registered for see images
Pros:
- Their names sound similar.
- He's old enough to have known Madara.
- His death is somewhat mysterious.
Cons:
- His soul was sealed by Hiruzen after having been resurrected by Orochimaru.
- He has no known motivation to attack Konohagurake or the shinobi world at large.
Zetsu (Clone)

Pros:
- A Zetsu clone would be able to mimic Uchiha chakra/traits when all Uchiha (except Sasuke) are presumed dead.
- If the Zetsu clone is a clone of Madara (or another Uchiha), it would explain a lot about Tobi's and Madara's connection.
- Although most characters refer to Tobi as "Madara", Zetsu refers to Tobi as "Tobi".
Cons:
- Naruto would have realized Tobi was a Zetsu clone after their most recent encounter in the manga.
- If Tobi were a clone, he would be relatively weak.
- Tobi and Zetsu communicate aloud with one another in private. If they were the same being, there would be no need.
Madara Uchiha

Pros:
- Tobi and Madara have similar knowledge and motivations.
- Madara is one of the few characters able to sustain himself for so many years.
- Tobi has sharingan and rinnegan. The only other character shown to have both is Madara.
Cons:
- Madara was summoned by Kabuto's edo tensei.
- Madara has not been shown to have the ability to split his chakra/body as Muu does.
Izuna Uchiha

Pros:
- He has an intimate connection with Madara.
- He has reasonable motivation for the Moon's Eye Plan.
- He is a high level sharingan user that could presumabley unlock the rinnegan.
Cons:
- He had his eyes taken by Madara.
- He was shown dead in his casket.
Obito Uchiha

Pros:
- Kakashi's kamui, used through Obito's former sharingan is similar to Tobi's teleportation technique.
- It would explain how giddy and childish Tobi was when he was first introduced.
Cons:
- No plausible motivation to attack Konohagurake or the shinobi world at large.
- He did not show an ounce of emotion when encountering Kakashi, as one would expect.
Kagami Uchiha

Pros:
- Their haircuts are very similar.
- His death is not noted.
- He is old enough to have known Madara (briefly).
Cons:
- Questionable motivation.
- Highly uninvolved with the story line.
Shishui Uchiha

Pros:
- High level sharingan user
- His "body flicker" time/space jutsu is similar to Tobi's teleporation.
Cons:
- No motivation to attack the Uchiha clan, Konohagurake, or the Shinobi world at large.
- He clearly worked with Itachi to preserve the peace.
- If Tobi was Shishui, Itachi would have likely known about it through their encounters in Akatsuki.
Teuchi Ichiraku

Pros:
- It's awesome.
- It's awesome.
- It's still awesome.
Cons:
- It's not very realistic.
Conclusion:
There are numerous purported identities of the masked man. While there is mixed logic to support any of them, there is fairly definite evidence against all of them. This means that no matter who Tobi is, when Kishimoto reveals him it's going to be:
