Are animal summons necessary?

Having a giant animal is great for transport and Tsunade's slug is handy for healing and communication. However, in combat applications, animal summons have their limits. It seems that when facing an advanced opponent, summons get in the way (ex. Naruto vs. Pain). Also, it seems the more advanced of a shinobi you are, the less you utilize your summon. Many of the best shinobi don't appear to have one at all. I mean, how frequently has Naruto summoned Gambunta lately? The only combat use I see is if you can spam the hell out of summoning as with Pain's animal path, and in that case it was more to create distraction and chaos than anything.

What do you think? How useful are summons really?

That cameleon Pain summoned while fighting Jiraya was pretty amazing i think, to be able to hide inside him and do that camouflage thing

well take into account naruto verse is looking more like dbz now-a-days where people are walking around with nuclear war heads in their arsenal like bm and ems, animal summons would only get in the way of abilities like that, but put 2 above average ninja together like kakashi and zabuza and then we see some ninja dogs coming out, given its advantageous to the situation, sometimes a giant toad just really doesnt help your battle strategy

Hiruzen Sarutobi used Enma quite frequently..

and he was very useful. He even managed to 'poke' the ninetails out of konoha xd

Well a classic example was Jiraiya using Ma and Pa so thag he could use sage mode for a longer peroid of time. He also used them for there battle experience and unique genjutsu against Pein.

Actually the more skilled the Shinobi the better there summon is ! I think their cool having somthingmto fight wi/ and divert the enemy's attention away from you while get a lethal strike in !

i think we should exclude monkey king enma from this thought process because he turns into one of the most op weapons in naruto, so he'll always have a useful position in battle

meeehhh they are important danzos summon was working great for him till sasuke burnt it and gamabunta was summoned a shit ton....i mean it depends on the animal but alot of the have their own powers that make them helpful

I agree that some animal's powers are unique and useful, but Danzo's tapir summon was lame! All it took to defeat it was some half ass fire jutsu.

Jiraiya summoned medium sized toads a few times, they wouldn't get in the way so much, something like that would be more useful but I agree the bigger they are the more they get in the way and not very good for all battles
