It would explain his affairs with Orochimaru and Danzo IMO.
Tobi seems to be very familiar with Danzo and the way ROOT/Anbu operation. Madara himself shouldnt be familiar with ROOT (time period), or at least not to the extent as of who would actually join the operation
here he seems to have an idea of the people of ppl who usually join ROOT and those who normally wouldnt have;

This would also explain how he may have been able to interacted with Itachi and even knew all about Danzo's involvement in the Uchiha clan being destoryed.
Also, Tobi's sharingan's+Orochimaru's scientific expertise= Danzo's arm hahaxd
However, he abandons the village for whatever reason and forms akatsuki after many years, but not before he become one of Oro's experiments himself with the 1st DNA or at least got his hands on some as well. (Zetsu and his Zetus like body)

Now,
As far as we know Orochimaru joined akatsuki to get infomation, what exactly we dont know. But we do know that during this time he found out who Tobi really was/is and his ultimate plan. As as a result Tobi cursed his name more than anyone else, which to me would be the reaction from someone who has past history with another person.

*Note* Another thing that bothered me was Tobi's comment about him being no one, basically him having no identity. Now, this IMO=ROOT as we all know this is their methods.
