Ok what i mean by they failed is tht they failed in seeing the perfect way of beating madara.
As you can see here Madara is completely incased in gaaras sand.

Now the way they failed is they came up with this huge plan of how theyd paralise him then hit him with a jiinton, when they cudve incampacitated madara witha simple sand burial! The first technique we ever saw from gaara!
it has the ability to completely crush a body as we saw in the forest of death during the chuunin exams (cnt find the link).
Now not saying this wud kill madara, but it wud delay him long enough so they cud seal him. Cuz if u look at the link above its clear tht the seals were nearly placed. One sand burial and madara cudve gone bye bye.

madara only activated susanoo right before he was being sealed, if gaara had done sand burial while the sand was around him, madara wudnt have time to activate susanoo since he was counting on them trying to seal him
