Probably Sai, Shikamaru, Hinata and Sakura at the top and the rest varying at the bottom (although the rest of Team Asuma has more of a chance because of Shippuden screen time).

Importance in the series.

Neji - first to achieve jounin status and noble clan heir.

Sai - top ranking root officer, actually plays a role of a ninja rather than a superpowered human like the rest of the main characters in the series.

Shino - noble clan heir, boss, never lost a cannon fight.

Chouji - noble clan heir, can get over his obesity in like .5 seconds... lets see you fatties do that!!!

Rock Lee - has no choice but to be that guy that somewhat maintains a bridge from narutoverse and reality by not having any sort of superpower besides walking on water. and always proves to have entertaining fight scenes!

Sakura - used to be motivation for the main character, but then kishi wised up n made a worthy adversary for naruto to grow upon.

Hinata - she only ranks down here because naruto is not making his move on his victory punani. nuff said xd

Kiba/Akamaru - rival that kinda fell off the face of the earth because kishi doesnt care for the weak apparently. but has a good sense of friendship

Shikamaru - relates to the lazy in all of us, probably wishes he was rock lee because he would have no access to ninja talent and can just live life as a normal civilian.

the other 2 are just cow fodder for the enemies enjoy!

For all those that used Sasuke or Naruto, theyre independent for one and also he did say "use Sai instead of Naruto" ....Honestly >.<

Personally I think Ino should be last but Ino-Shika-Cho can't work without her so I guess she's useful. Sakura for healing purposes. Sai for aerial attacks & signals. Shino for sneak attack with his insects. Neji, Rock Lee, Hinata, Kiba & TenTen ... well Taijutsu skills.

Well in the show they elaborated on the fight and made it 100000x better. In the manga the fight lasted 2 pages i think: one with hinata charging pain and then pain slamming her into the ground and then the second where he stabbed her.
