This is mostly my opinion so read if you got spare time
Lets start with the elder son.
" He believed that force and strength were the key to peace.When the Sage was on his deathbed, he selected the younger brother to carry on his dream of establishing peace throughout the ninja world. The older brother, angry and jealous that his father had not chosen him, fought his younger sibling to claim what he felt was rightfully his."
-i think the older son had the wrong view on what he peace was, kind of like pain who believe people should feel pain to understand peace ect. i think this all began before he was born he might have got some dark sinister power from the juubi while it was still sealed in his father, he might not have noticed and it might have never came out since he was the sage's son and it took its time and it needed something to trigger it(maybe his brother being chosen not him triggered it) so i believe that negative emotions trigger the dark power passed from juubi to him..ofcourse i have no way to back this up so lets move on.
- i believe the sage had a different kind of dojutsu before he sealed the juubi inside him it was special on its on..but it fused with the juubi's eyes creating a rinnegan..so when the eyes where passed down to the older son he didnt just get the full eyes the sage had he got half of his father and half of the juubi ..i think thats why all the abilities the uchihas are dark and require to kill siblings and friends because they are sort of curse by the juubi and they are affected just as the older son was it got less and less during the years but the curse is still there i think thats what drived people like madara and sasuke.
-i think this one is a far stretch but i think when they were fighting because of the elder brothers hatred(younger son and older) , he figured out that since the brother had the sage's body he just needed the body to be complete, driven by the hatred and power he took either the brother's or the his father's dna giving him extra abilities like healing and a long life...i am not going to say he is tobi but it could be possible..i think the juubi might have tried passing a vision along with the eyes telling the brother how to get powers and be stronger so that one day he could free him and they could work together...if you see tobi he has his wicked kind of twisted idea about peace...just like how the elder son believed force was the way to achieve peace
-lastly i believe that the older son lived and since he was cursed lets say ..he either realised there was no point fighting his brother and he would need some strong people of his lineage so would explain the encounter with madara he could have met more before (and taught them forbidden jutsu's ect like izanagi) he could have been the one who wrote SOME parts of the uchiha tablet ect ( seeing how people created izanami to stop izanagi id say that there were people who didnt agree with what he said so being an outcast he went into hiding and working in the shadows that would explain the masks too)..i think he knew he needed help to free the juubi that might be why he tried getting strong people with him.
overall i think the elder son got more than he could handle and got consumed by the juubi's hatred and it merged with his idea of peace and he thinks he is trying to achieve peace but he doesnt realise that the juubi took advantage and just wants him free it.
