Chapter 4: The Firecracker Meets the Demon Part 1

“Another dusty road again,” a hooded figure clad with a naginata and a large scroll moaned to his companion, a well-endowed woman dressed in a kunoichi outfit with a navy blue robe covering her whole body. “Why can’t I find a great spot to drink and burst out my full youth? Damn it all!”

“Eh, just shut up already,” his companion replied. “We’ve been doing this since God-knows-when. You chose to leave the village, and I just followed you. And remind me again why I did so?”

“Because I promised you that we’ll get rich in no time,” the hooded figure said in jest. “But I guess you’re an idiot for falling for that excuse, huh?”

The hooded figure’s partner hit him on the head hard. At that moment, they heard a shuffling noise near the bushes on their left side. In an instant they became alert, striking their battle stances. A few more seconds, shuriken were shooting from the bushes, yet the two easily avoided the attack by jumping up the trees. But it seemed to be a wrong decision, as they saw paper bombs lying all over the place.

“****, it’s a trap!” the woman declared as she looked at the hooded figure. “Damn it, Hibiki! Use your Swift Release!”

“Swift Release: Shadowless Flight!” Hibiki scooped up his companion and barely managed to avoid the explosion. Six dark figures threw more kunai with paper bomb tags attached at them, but missed and contributed to the existing chaos.

“What the hell is happening? Why are they attacking us?” the woman demanded, while shielding her face from flying debris. But her companion didn’t reply. They stopped in mid-air and landed on a patch of land clear of trees. Their pursuers arrived a few seconds later.

“What do you want from us? Money?” Hibiki started, but was interrupted because one of the figures dashed towards them with a katana in hand. Hibiki and the woman dodged the incoming slash, but the attacker diverted towards the woman’s direction and accomplished in keeping her in a headlock. Hibiki on the other hand, was ambushed by three more of their opponents. He countered them with his naginata.

“Sword Style: Thousand Year Slash!”

His naginata glowed with black chakra, and with a swing he sent a visible shockwave that took down the enemies. He followed by throwing kunai at the rest of the group, who easily deflected every projectile with their own kunai. He turned around and saw his comrade held in a headlock by one of the opposing team, stopped in his tracks lowered his weapon.

“Ah, Hitomi!” Hibiki yelled. He looked at the hostage-taker meaningfully. “Please stop! I’ll give you anything, just don’t hurt her!”

The enemies seemed to drop their guard. The tension eased a bit. The man holding Hitomi hostage replied, “Put down your weapon, raise your hands in the air and don’t do anything suspicious or you’ll never see your girlfriend again. But I guess you don’t see any of us with that blindfold on.”

“I’m not his girlfriend, you bastard!” Hitomi retorted, struggling to escape her captor’s hold. “Damn it, Hibiki! Don’t just stand there! Do something!”

But Hibiki did as he was commanded to do by the leader. But when he reached the distance between his weapon and Hitomi, he put on a sly grin that the leader noticed. He halted Hibiki.

“What’s so funny?” the leader yelled. “You don’t care what happens to this woman?”

“No,” Hibiki replied, ignoring Hitomi’s ashen face. “Because you are all going to die, right about now. Jinton: Yondaime’s Legacy!”

In a second, Hibiki somehow teleported back to his naginata, then pierced and slashed each of the enemies who he attacked with kunai earlier, then instantly behind Hitomi’s captor, the naginata blade poking the back. The leader looked at him in fear and confusion.

“H-how did you-,” the hostage-taker started, but Hibiki cut him off.

“How? It was easy. I had all of my weapons bear a seal that lets me channel my Swift Release through, making me teleport to my naginata and fallen kunai,” Hibiki explained. He sensed the continued questioning expression. “I also put a same seal on Hitomi, which is why I am right behind you. I’m telling you this because I’ll be killing you anyways. Good bye, old man!”

Without another word, Hibiki stabbed the leader through the throat and shoved the body away from Hitomi, who look flustered and embarrassed at the same time. Hibiki smiled at her.

“Hey, idiot! Why didn’t you tell me of your plan earlier?” Hitomi demanded, while blushing more. “And where did you put the seal on me?”

“It doesn’t matter. We’d better get going,” Hibiki replied calmly, while picking up his scroll, sheathing his naginata and looting money and other belongings from the bodies. “We’d be in big trouble if someone saw us with these bodies. Let’s go!”

“But-,” Hitomi started, though gave up the argument and followed Hibiki towards the roadside of the forest.

In the distance, a shadowy figure hiding in the trees continued observing their every move, its eyes burning with a reddish glow.
