Who has the most knowledge on the Rinnegan?

It doesn't matter how experienced they are with the Rinnegan. Experience and Knowledge are completely different. That's why I eliminated Nagato. That just left Tobi and Madara, and I just figured that Tobi probably knew more about the Rinnegan than Madara because it seems like Tobi knows all. xd

How'd he die? Why couldn't he just stay alive, like apparently Tobi who seemed to be in on his plan?

Because he used the outer path to bring Izuna back to life and gave him the rinnengan (which is why Tobi claims the rinnengan were his to begin with, because they are his eyes just upgraded) to give to Nagato. Then he would use them to bring back Madara.
