Another point that you should look into. I dunno if I am imagining things but didn't Jiraiya point to which signature was his on the contract? Then there was only one name after his, well who else could it be between the time of Jiraiya and Naruto?

No you're not imagining things. Minato's name is on the contract, because he too summoned toads from Mt. Myouboku. But that still doesn't prove he had SM. I agree that it's possible but the series hasn't revealed if this statement is true or not yet. Who knows maybe Jiraiya offered to teach Minato Toad Sage Mode and he declined, saying he didn't want to take the chance of being stuck a frog or that it would slow him down lol

Exactly, Minato was never put in a near death experience(RDS doesn't count because he died at the end of that experience lol), so there was no need for it. Everyone keeps saying Naruto has truly mastered TSM, with that being said Minato may have had it but didn't have the window to gather energy for it. I would even go as far as to say Minato was the worst out of the 3 of them in the technique, if he did in fact have TSM. Naruto can go Sage quickly and while moving, Jiraiya can go Sage slowly while moving, maybe Minato went Sage slowly and while meditating :shrug: IDK

I didn't mention intelligence. SM requires that you control your chakra very well and hold still doing those chakra things (gathering chakra) and Minato could perfectly control his chakra he wouldn't face any trouble using SM bcuz he could easily control his chakra and then feel the nature chakra.
Being the son of Minato Namikaze might help a lot bcuz of chakra's type and the way he was, if you watched the last tower Naruto's movie then you'd see his rasengan matching with his father's rasengan bcuz of the type of chakra. And perhaps being Uzumaki helped too.

Or he doesn't need to control his chakra in order to perform that jutsu?

Being a strong shinobi's child doesn't make the child stronger, example; Asuma wasn't that great(still one of my favorites though), Itachi.....need I say more. Skills and strength are not passed down like that in NARUTO. So Naruto being his son is irrelevant
