I still see this debated, even though Kishi’s genjutsu laws are pretty straightforward, the concept really can’t be that hard to grasp.
“the effects of genjutsu are illusory; instead of attacking the victim's body, like taijutsu or ninjutsu, genjutsu techniques manipulate the flow of chakra in the victim's brain, thus causing a disruption in their senses.”
Not that hard, eh? Genjutsu is chakra inserted into the brain, to manipulate the flow of chakra into the brain, thus causing disruption into the five senses, which Genjutsu tampers with.
Now, let’s look at Sasori:
Sasori is very interesting because he might be the only one who is/was truly immune to genjutsu. He lacks a brain therefore his senses can’t be tampered with. It would literally have no effect on him because you can’t manipulate the flow of chakra in his brain without reaching his nonexistent brain.
Instead, he has a heart. With that heart, he is able to function like a regular human being, which he successfully managed to do by removing internal structures.
These are facts since it was not only stated by the man himself but also the databook:
[The Living Core]
Sasori's person embodies the idea of everlastingness and indestructibility. But to generate chakra, a live bodily portion is indispensable. That very part of Sasori is now his Core, and his one and only weakness. In the middle of his fight against Chiyo, he hesitated, for a split second, to attack her. His parents. They pierced through his Core, in something resembling an embrace. Heart and body alike, Sasori had been unable to turn completely into a puppet.
In essence, Sasori is generally safe from genjutsu altogether. Obviously, there are rare exceptions like Izanami and Izanagi. One bypasses all the senses entirely while the other is cast on oneself.
