Apparently.
Iruka used to be Naruto's father figure (Jiraiya was more like a grandfather-uncle). Not anymore - not cool enough. He's gotta say he feels like a big brother to him.

Kabuto, sensing the trend, creepily propostioning Sasuke - to be his NEW big brother? I didn't know that when you had a faulty one random villains would offer to step in. (Also, Itachi feels the need to TELL Sasuke 'he's lying!'. Hate to say it, hon, but it wasn't a very good lie, and if you thought he was a 'good liar' from that... one too many times through the Edo Tensei?) :sy:

Orochimaru and Kabuto's first meeting is depicted. Cue the squeeing OroKabu fangirls, who have been proud to be the fans of one of the most obvious, canon pairings in the entire wacky mish-mash that is the 'romance' side of Naruto. However, Kishimoto seems to be regretting his previous distribution of OroKabu 'like Girl Scout Cookies' as one fan put it. Now, even though he's screwed up the timeline enough that Kabuto is obviously overage when they meet, Orochimaru has to be even more KC (kishipolitically correct) and declare that he will be his superior (;) ) his parent :)confused:) and his brother
WTH

Take a note, boys and girls. If you're an uncle, aunt, friend, cousin, sister, boyfriend/girlfriend, wife, husband, partner, parent, whatever - that ain't cool no more.
Get in the groove. Grab the nearest unattatched young male (non relation is important. If you have an actual little brother, inform him that the only cool thing is self-realization. Then go tell a snake-human hybrid that they remind you of your younger self, liberally supplemented with extracts from Confusionus) and tell them 'I'm your new big brother!'
Instant awesome. Kishimoto later chapters style.
:kaito: < - That smiley got a new little brother! Now it's cool too!

For some reason, when Iruka said that Naruto was like a "brother", that bothered the hell out of me too. I always thought they had some cute, minor father-son relationship.

My life is a lie!

aren't you a big sister?

Yes, which is why I have issues with Kishimoto acting as if NO relationships exist but being brothers. Apparently many people don't realize this, but my post was written with great sarcasm - I was flipping angry, and if I'm not screaming or incoherent it comes out in sarcasm.

Yup. My only explanation for this 'big brother phenomenon' *puts on glasses and looks scolarly* is that, Kishimoto having had Itachi declare he didn't particularly care about Sasuke, he is now scrabbling desperately to find some other 'brotherly relationships' to fill the gap.
Iruka and Naruto definitely had a father-son relationship, and it was very cute - I always liked the scene where Iruka talks to him after Jiraiya's death, and how he wanted to be the chunnin to meet them after the Forest of Death. <3 Here's to all kinds of human relations.
