it uses nature chakra
nothing less nothing more

the big difference is between the user
kabuto has the advantage of jugos,karin and suigetsus abillties
but these abilities have nothing to do with the actual sage mode of kabuto

simply sm?? no.. he has made the sorrounding so that they cannot use their aces (susano), itachi again cannot use his tsukuyomi (which is as important to goku as his kaioken) , kabuto is using upgrades like karin's healing ability , jugo's nature energy absorbing skill , that liquifying technique... kabuto is using many things not just sm... so if its only about sm ,then manga has not shown its powerful techniques yet
