This is a relatively old theory I made once upon a time and I just wanted to put it out and mull it over with a new crowd.
Chakra Theory: Function of the Energies
Since taking a Look at the current events with the Edo Tensei resurrected ninjas, an old thought I used to have about the nature of chakra resurfaced and I think it makes some level of sense. It’s based on a different way of thinking about what we already know. It won’t take long.
Chakra Formation Energies
Now, we have been well aware for a while that chakra is formed by uniting the physical energy stored in the body’s cells and the mental/spiritual energy that one acquires through training, meditation, learning and basic all round experience. The general consensus has been that these two energies exist within the body and simply mix to form chakra. While this is true, I have a theory that it’s not just a simple mixture of energies.
First of all what is the Physical energy? Well as said it is a dynamic, palpable energy or at least medium for energy that exists within or rather is generated by the cells in the body. It must be highly energetic and serves as stamina for the body. Most people also agree that it is finite although these reserves are constantly replaced with good nutrition and rest. These reserves can be improved by physical training which makes sense. Constant strain on the supply will improve its levels.
Fair enough.
What is the Spiritual energy? The same as physical energy except it’s in the brain? I just somehow don’t believe that and this is where I begin to differ. I think spiritual energy is nothing like physical energy. I don’t even think it is palpable to begin with. It isn’t some finite mass of energy that just gets replaced at regular intervals. I believe spiritual energy is a constant, an accumulation of all the knowledge and experience that an individual gains throughout their entire lifetime, as a result it is fixed and only improves with time. Every thought, emotion, skill, memory, etc. all contribute to spiritual energy. All the parts of an individual you can’t see and touch. Spiritual energy increases over time with training in techniques, meditation, studying and just generally learning and understanding.
Well if this is the case and spiritual energy is constant, then am I implying that Chakra capacity is completely dependent on physical energy? Absolutely, I’ll make my point.
There is already a well-known trend in the Narutoverse:
Returning to my point above, it can now be seen that vast spiritual energy has no role in chakra capacity whatsoever, but its role lies in DEFINING it.
Hence:
Physical energy provides the Force
Spiritual energy provides the Function
I believe they exist as a duality of sorts that cannot be useful alone but together they can form chakra. Everyone has both but excels at one more than the other.
Another interesting trend above that I haven’t seen mentioned is their development as ninjas.
Descendants of the elder son develop quickly and have an extreme capacity for learning. They become skilled a lot more quickly.
E.g. Itachi and Kakashi (not Uchiha I know but…ok I don’t know), known as characters with some of the lowest chakra levels were the absolute geniuses of their times. They could execute multiple skills and became Jounin or ANBU at ridiculously young ages. Joining them are Sasuke and Neji, also considered geniuses and the top rookies of their years. Geniuses tend to be among those that possess higher spiritual energies.
Descendants of the younger son develop slowly but wait for it…they become some of the most powerful Late-Bloomers.
E.g. Jiraiya and Naruto, self-confessed slow learners are as deadly as they come now but both started off whack and outshined by their brighter, more talented, team mates (Oro and Sasuke). I don’t know how Hiruzen was in youth but he made one strong ass old man. Even though he may not have been in his prime, he displayed some impressive ass longevity and strength.
But I’ve gone off topic.
Personality in Chakra
This theory goes on to make even more sense when it comes to situations in which a personality has an impact on one’s own chakra. As I said before even emotions contribute to spiritual energies. This would explain the sinister nature of chakra that has been so described. There’s no such thing as sinister chakra just for the heck of it. An individual themselves is sinister and as a result this is felt in the chakra. Strong emotion may have so much of an effect on chakra that it can enrich it or even manipulate it’s nature.

The final proof that the spiritual energy is a constant is edo tensei. It would seem that during death the body is broken down and one loses the physical energy along with it. The spirit travels to the nether realm or “pure world”. The very fact that the spirit can be brought back whole, I would take to mean that spiritual energy isn’t finite in itself but conceptual.
Hope to hear your views and arguments. This is a theory after all and even if it’s not true, it would make a damn lot of sense.

- The demon foxes chakra for example has no ill effect when the demon foxes attitude is not present. When he is, however, it will be corrode with indiscriminate malevolence.
- As Sasuke becomes more and more angry, jealous, vengeful and outright negative, his chakra has started to take on a malevolent attribute that has enriched it to the point where it’s quality is so high that he can execute MS techniques with less effort and energy each time. He may not be a chakra beast, but he has some powerful ass chakra. Sasuke’s spiritual energy has been shaped by his experiences. He was not born this way and this just shows that mental energy is the deciding factor in chakra quality.
- Orochimaru expressed killing intent on Sakura and Sasuke which paralyzed them back in the chuunin exams. Oro’s chakra has always been described as malevolent, yet he too was not born this way.
