IF i quite remember, Oro's technique was never based on a Dragon sage technique. It was never mentioned before now, and its a pathetic attempt to associate it with the curse mark.Well you say there is no lore or history behind it ...
... but then you have to remember all that curse mark sh*t that Oro was dabbling with to achieve this very same effect. He was trying to cheat the system as it were, as Kabuto said that the curse mark was a pathetic attempt at achieving the true sage mode.
Remember how Oro was testing all these ninjas' bodies to see if they were compatible with the curse mark? Kabuto said that Orochimaru did not have the right kind of body for the dragon sage technique(s), hence he was on the hunt for a body that would work! Sasuke's sharingan was going to be an extra bonus though.
So really, there is plenty of backstory on the "hunt" for this mode, we just didn't know that it was backstory yet xd
Now as for the sacred cave that Kabuto found, yes, we don't have much backstory on that yet. But also we never had any backstory on Myobokuzen when it first appeared either!

You are correct that it was not based on a Dragon Sage technique. Orochimaru could not achieve Dragon Sade abilities and thus searched for a way to mimic its power by other means. Thus, the curse mark was a technique created by Orochimaru himself using Jugo's power to take in Nature chakra.
Good point. However Kishi as a writer is not going according to his original plot,(If he ever had one). He's changing the storyline either to suit consumer demands or to extend the series even further than he planned. Thats what we're saying. Every story naturally has loops. He goes back for the loops and attaches strings to them, linking them to the present. He could back to a point in the chuunin exam, and say the barrier created by Oro's thugs during the 3rd Hokage's and Oro's fight was a Dragon Sage mode technique or a copy of it, and he'll provide enough evidence to prove it, and we'll believe it
