Those side letters are prooooobably there because he was drawing on a book...
if I am right it was probably during class in order to get over the boring lesson

Personally I drew better on books and desks than on clean white paper >.>

Pretty nice Makes him appear more 3-D than traditional shading. Go further and he might pop out of the paper LOL.
