yes we do not know how he died but the same can be said of madara
one could assume they fought each other one last time and killed one another
hell for all we know Tobirama could have seen an opening to become hokage if he killed his brother in secret
he may have fought 10000 ninjas or just one
so until Kishi tells us or if he does tell us

we just won't know till then

and to your above post madara may have died when the 1sts dna was implanted as Orochimarus experiments have shown it's pretty lethal and only two people have survived it

finding some sharingan at that time wouldn't be a stretch as they still had a vast quantity of living Uchihas at the time who could be plucked

Madara awekened the rinnegan shortly before his death, yeah. That's when he surpassed Hashirama.

Madara and Hashirama could've died a natural death like so6p, but only Kishi can tell for sure.
