Sasori was one of the strongest Akatsuki members. Yet, I rarely see him in threads. The sole hype is Pain, and Itachi. Sometimes Kakazu's name is brought up. The names that are mentioned the most are that of Madara(even though he still hasnt shown anything of value), Pain(clear reason why), Itachi(of course), Kakazu(definitely strong), and thats pretty much what I hear.
But if you throw away Madara for the sake of numbers and because he hasnt done anything, during the flourishing moments of Akatsuki before Taka joined Sasori clearly was either the strongest or second strongest person. I say this to say that Pain is the person who was the strongest no doubt. Itachi sometimes is looked as the second strongest, some even say the 1st. But Sasori is the only one who could hold a candle with these two or win in a match with at least one, thereby making him the strongest or second strongest.
You’re probably thinking well he is pretty much off his rocker. Well I am not, I will outline information. Mind you this isnt a theory, it is an essay! You have to consider being able to kill Sasori, he was one the hardest to kill. He had the most weapons in his arsenal. He still has weapons we didnt see...I will leave the rest of the elaboration to this next segment.
Abilities Sasori possessed!
To paint this picture as clear and perfectly as possible, I have to justify a bit on what I mean. Sasori was one of the hardest members to kill. He died due strongly on polt. Orochimaru knew he would have needed Kabuto to help kill him. He was stronger than the Sanin. He felt no pain; he had defensive capability out of this world. He had Iron sand, which is strongly condensed chakra which can take an offensive or defensive form. He was analytical, very keen, he put poison in everything! If an average med-ninja was there they would have died, one cut from Sasori and you are dead. I just said Random things and his skill is amazing. He clearly is top tier. I will further elaborate on him, and then Ill go as far as to give a scenario against either Pain or Itachi.
Sasori's abilities which made him top tier
No doubt Sasori was top tier, he had one battle but we do not respect him for one reason or another. Yet, he is a ninja who would have beaten anyone due to the overwhelming amount of jutsu and skill he had. He was the greatest puppeteer.
Sasori's intelligence
First off, Sasori was one of the most intelligent people, not only in Akatsuki, but in the Naruto-universe. The reason is is because as a master puppeteer he knew about the human body inside and out. He knew as much about it as a medical ninja would. This aided him in battle, knowing weak point, etc. He also made poisons which were almost incurable. He was very analytical and prepared for battles. He was a perfectionist. Going up against him unprepared or on the "fly" would easily lead to your doom. He also made a mind controlling Jutsu which controlled Kabuto for some time. He turned hisself into a puppet in order to null pain, and also to withstand poisons. He retained only his heart in a cylindrical object which probably took a lot of time to do and a great understanding of the human biological make-up.

All and all, Sasori said that he had a total of 298 puppets and because of plot he could add to his collection and have 300. His puppets were his line of defense and offense. Turning hisself into a puppet he also had some taijutsu skills, and could fly. He was so fast as a puppet masters his hands became blurry. Being that he was a puppet I doubt that genjutsu could affect a body which is made of puppet. So all Sharingan lovers who make an argument against this, is something you cannot do. Because his body was a puppet could not affect his brain/chakra because the body is put into an illusion, but Sasori had no "body". He only had a heart. His body was near indestrutible, and again felt no pain. So ameratsu would be ineffective to such a body. Although it would burn it or several puppets, it would be all for naught due to sealing methods and plenty of puppets. Also, Sasori could change bodies.

Defensive capabilities
Offensive capabilities
-Hiruko- This puppet was the puppet he used the most and would usually get the job done verses any Shinobi. It was capable as both offenses movesets and defensive abilities (like most of his puppets).
It had a long tail which carried poison. It had a various weapons which came from the mouth of this puppet which were difficult to dodge. The only reason they were dodge is because of the experience that Chiyo had. These weapons too were poisonous. Hiruko acted as a defense because he a strong, thick body which had a armor on the back of it and shuttered the weak points that most puppeteers had. With this body he could also release senbon which were deadly from even a stratch. Even a sharingan wouldn’t be able to dodge them all, not byakugan, nor rinnegan. To even get the real fight started one must have enough strength to break through Hiruko. Again, due to plot purposes Sakura performed such feat, not saying that she isn’t strong but saying to dodge this and survive is a feat within itself. Naruto and Kakashi would have surely died verses this opponent.
Part 1.2
After Hiruko, one must face Sasori. He not having his body is startling. He is a form of his teenage self. But he doesn’t use himself just yet. He goes to his most favorite puppet and sure enough it is poisonous and instant death waits. This puppet is the third Kazekage. Said to be the strongest Kazekage in the Sand village due to his Iron Sand. This is a unique Keke genkai. Sasori was so intelligent that he turned him into a human puppet making him retain his chakra which enabled him to use such keke genkai.
-Third Kazekage- This puppet was one of greatest weapons in his arsenal. To me it had defensive capabilities beyond Gaara's sand, it was said to have qualities like the former also. This Iron Sand was both offensive and defensive. It also had poison in it. Sasori started his fight with big deadly, extra sharpened blades which were attached to this puppet. It was deadly also possessing poison. He also had arm which could utterly mash an opponent or poison too if need be. This adds to his deadly arsenal. Which shinbi would survive these types of feats? If not for plot we know the outcome. Sasori was just too strong. I will be showing his feats with the third Kazekage. And his abilities overall:
