Faaaack! My post didn't work, so re-writing all of this, so bare with me
A few things...
Madara and Tobi were working together, they both wanted to achieve the moon eye plan.
They gave Nagato the rinnegan so that he could resurrect Madara then they would take the eyes. In one chapter, Tobi says he led Yahiko and Nagato the way he wanted them to go, and my guess is he even sent the Konoha ninja to Nagato's house.
Also, I think it is said, because Nagato is in the Uzumaki clan, he has very good chakra, another reason as to why they gave it to him, infact, I will go further into this idea. The fact he lived in a war zone where Konoha ninja are around, he was the perfect person to give it to. With them having a grudge on Konoha, it was in their best interest to have Nagato on the same moral ground as to disliking Konoha. So that he would follow them in their plan.
Second big thing is that edo's NEVER die. The only was to destroy them is to seal them, or have the caster made 3 hands signs then say "release". Even if you kill the caster of this justu, the edo lives on. Even more reason as to why they would kill Nagato and take the eyes back. This result only leaves sealing left to defeat edo Madara.
Thus making edo Madara practically Immortal along side Tobi.
As for them 'chasing the senju' I think it was just Madara that wanted to be in charge, the leader.
All in all I do prefer the Senju, they are (or were, not sure) simply supreme
