TBF , yes dbz is legedary, but so is pokemon and that doesnt render it flawless. no one can actually deny the poor quality of DBZ , it looked great watching the fights and power beams tho. compare dbz to naruto and one piece...heck even bleach and u will see the growth in manga from those days. the only reason why DBZ seemed so sick was because it was superior to the anime that was about in those times. i for one think dbz is a poorly structured manga/anime.

DBZ was hte anime that made mainstream america aware of anime. The two aren't even the same. Naruto has to develop it's characters cos that's what the story is about. DBZ is the classical story of good vs. evil. It doesnt call for all the details and stuff because at the end of the day evil is evil and it must be stopped.

So I used to watch DBZ when I was younger and thought it was the best thing ever(who on here didnt); but looking back I realize its probably one of the worst animes ever made. Horrible story line and no character development whatsoever.

I mean practically all the main villains (frieza, buu, etc..) had no motive and just wanted to destroy the world just because. No depth to any of the characters, no backstory on the villains everything is just black and white. Either evil or good.

In naruto and other animes countless episodes are spent developing the main characters and the villains and how they became the villain. I mean all of naruto is about how Sasuke grows into a villain. DBZ is just a very simplistic anime.Only thing going to DBZ was the action. Im just saiyin (lol see wat I did there)...
Totally Agree ! only by looking at the naruto series ; each and every caracter wants to bring peace on his own way even the villains ; but in DBZ villains usually want to demolish the univers !!

WHAaaaaaaaaaaaaT! Dude what are you smokin man, DBZ was the mother that gave birth to popular anime in America. DBZ is the basis for Naruto man and it was just plain awesome. dude, thats pretty stupid

If DBZ counts as "legendary" than yes, Pokemon is indeed "legendary". You may not like it but more people recognize the little yellow rat than they do a spiky blond haired guy with a tail. Don't hate on the genetically engineered monster-pets.

On a side-note: I thought this thread was going to compare how a pretty cool manga universe with ninjas doing battles that focused on strategy and intellect turned into a DBZ-esque power fest.

Well, to start out...I thought DBZ was amazing when I was little. I mean, I grew up with it. Now, I wouldn't call it bad for the reasons that you did. As you can probably tell just by watching DBZ, you get the kind of feel that it wasn't planned like most anime are nowadays. To its credit it was probably difficult to know what people wanted out of an anime at the time because DBZ was one of the first mainstream anime.

That's really the entire point to this whole thread. Anime like Naruto feel well thought out, they feel planned. However, DBZ just feels like it was being written as it was going along. I love DBZ and I always will, but my point here is that one of the basics of writing, whatever type of writing it may be, is that you can't advance or further develop the story if the characters aren't developed as well, and that's the bottom line. Naruto character development began almost immediately, while DBZ character development didn't begin until the middle or end of the anime, and even then you didn't really get the sense that you knew the character that you were looking at.

But hey, maybe this whole post seems silly to you, like duh. Of course you can't develop a story without character development, that's like an inherit thing about plotlines, right? Well, that may be true, but a lot of people just go around bashing anime and other things because they find one little detail that they don't like about it. The only reason I even took the time out of my day to write this is so that the flaming and other things stop. Comments like, "DBZ gave birth to this and that" aren't really helping. We all know this because like I said earlier, DBZ was one of the first mainstream anime out there. My understanding isn't that DBZ is better or worse than Naruto or Bleach or any other anime out there. It's just that it isn't as developed as other anime.

Basically what I'm saying here is that you can't just make a thread because you feel that your opinion needs to be expressed. There are other ways in which to express your opinion than making a big thread about it that you know is going to start a flame war. I know that my post will most likely be ignored (They almost always are) But whatever. You guys can think what you want, but I'm getting my opinion out there as well, and maybe it can help stop the flaming at least in this thread, because it's not going anywhere. Eventually it's going to get closed like so many other topics like this. Have a nice ****ing day everyone, and please excuse my wall-of-text. Or don't. I don't care.

it's not THE WORST anime EVER but it doe's suck, the story is horrible the fighting is repetitive and it make's no sense at all for all of those boss's to come to one planet all the time when it's multi-planets in the series. plus goku is the only character that's strong? that's boring to watch one guy all the time while the other's die. and the movie's are even more stupid. but I've seen way worst but in the most worst ranking dbz is like top 5 but the first db was pretty cool and not forced on the fans like dbz was the manga is terrible omg the anime was better by far.
First off it makes plenty of sense. There were many strong fighters trying to destroy/take over the universe from all different parts, you only get to see what is going on Earth because the story focuses mainly on Goku. Thus explains the Kais who guarded the north, south, east, and west quadrants of the universe, and to oversee them was the Grand Kai. which helps show where Pikkon and other fighters come from. Goku is NOT the only strong character, in fact he has died more than any other Z fighter. The story is also alike to Naruto in the way that Goku was trying to convince Vegeta to come to the good side and he did for a while before giving himself to the darkness in his heart(Majin Vegeta). There's a lot of other things I could add, but for time issues I'll simply just say this. It is NOT just about a single man defending random villains who decided to coincidentally target Earth for destruction.

i agree ^^ and more to the point idk if anyone else knows this but... DBZ was EXTENDED it was never meant to go past the first season but then the fans kept asking for more... the creator had always wanted to finish it but to keep the fans happy he made new sagas, this might be why the plot had too many fights and pretty much straightforward... DBZ will always be a Legend among Legends...
and to the creator of this thread, you can just go f*** yourself if you want to hate on something hate on your life for you cant understand the beauty of the Classics...

Seriously, if it hadn't been for DBZ, America wouldn't know anything of anime. This show is a classic and it paved the way for other great animes as well including but not limited to Inyuyasha, Hajime No Ippo, One Piece, Fairy Tale, Brave Ten, Alucard, Seikerei, and the list goes on and on and on...your ignorance and nearsighted attitude is deplorable...GOOD DAY SIR!!

Damn god....
What does influence have to do with quality?
If a manga/anime is influenced by another it doesnt mean that it is worse...

But well, DBZ is awesome, i dont know anyone that doesnt recognize the kamehameha, and the awesome moments, as when goku killed himeslf to save is friends from the exploding cell; the father and son kamehameha; hercules asking people to raise their hands to help goku to make the spirit ball; goku turning into ss for the 1st time; etc

DBZ is awesome, by its fights and remarkable moments.
