Hmm, although we don;t know much other than the fact that Hashirama is a legend. We can't assume that Gaara wouldn't stand an epic chance-at present!

Gaara is the only person who has made Madara use his defence to a seriouse level. We have to give Gaara credit.

Don't under-estimate a genius.

Gaara is young and doesn't have as as much experience. Also, since he isn't a Jinchuuriki anymore he is even weaker. Gaara did almost beat Deidara but he was Shukaku in him. Maybe when he reaches the same age as Hashirama.
